Eagles best Idalou in pitcher’s duel, 3-2

The Ropes Eagles baseball team played host to the Idalou Wildcats this past Tuesday night at Ropes High School, resulting in the Eagles getting a hard-fought 3-2 win.

The game was a pitcher’s duel throughout its entirety as both teams scored a run in the first inning, then Ropes would score a run to take the lead in the second inning, then Idalou would tie it up in the fifth inning, and it would stay that way until the bottom of the eighth inning, where Ropes would walk it off.

“It was a good matchup with a well-coached Idalou team. Coach Brockman does a good job, and we had to play a solid game to get that win,” Ropes Head Baseball Coach Nathan Flores said. “Our team played well, and we did a great job hitting the ball with 11 hits for the game, but we struggled to get baserunners across the plate early. Maddux Sierra had a great game offensively and ultimately brought the winning run in with an RBI single to end the game. Our pitching was solid. Zach Ramirez and Elijah Flores only gave up four hits and two earned runs across eight innings combined. They also had 12 strikeouts collectively. There’s still a lot we have to work through, but I’m excited about our progress so far and excited to get started with district play next week.”

Other offensive standouts in the win included Garland Higginbotham going 2/4, Briggs Bourne going 2/3 with a walk and a run scored, Elijah Flores going ¼ with a run-batted-in, Jaivyth Cruz going 1/3 with a double and a walk, and Brayden Hogg going 1/3 with a run scored.

Follow the win, the Eagles improve to 7-3 overall this season, and they’re set to face Dimmit, Littlefield, San Jacinto and New Deal over the weekend before kicking off district play against the Smyer Bobcats on Tuesday at home at 4 p.m.
