Sundown fights hard at Roughneck Relays

Sundown High School hosted its Roughneck Relays track meet last Thursday, concluding with multiple top finishers. The meet concluded with varsity boys placing fourth and the varsity girls team winning first place overall.

The Roughettes finished their day with seven first place finishes, with five being individual awards.

Starting off with the 200 meter dash, Elexis Robinson won first place with a time of 27.23. For the 400 meter dash, Sarah Posadas placed first, running a 1:03.91. In the 800 meter run, Sundown had two top finishers with Ava McGlasson winning first, running a 2:26.59, and Addilyn Horn taking second place running a 2:38.73. The girls 100 meter dash concluded with Bethany Honesto finishing in third place running a 13.62.

Moving to the distance events, Addilyn Horn made her second appearance on the podium winning first place in the 1600 meter run, with a time of 6:16.91, and Karmindy Townsend placing third, running a 6:32.23. For the 3200 meter run Townsend placed again, this time in first place, with a time of 14:11.87 The relay events concluded with the Roughettes winning the 4x100 meter relay with a time of 51.50, placing third in the 4x200 meter relay with a 1:54.22, and finishing first in the 4x400 meter relay in 4:26.36 The Roughettes field events ended with Elexis Robinson winning long jump with a jump of 15-7, Riley Scrifey placing second in high jump with a height of five feet, and Karter Hord placing third in pole vault with a 6’ 6”.

Following the meet, Roughettes head coach Jared Neighbors reflected on a gritty performance.

“We had a lot of girls out... so we put kids in different events and they competed at a high level and accomplished personal bests,” Neighbors said. “It was a great start to the season, and I’m looking forward to seeing how they improve throughout the year.”

For Varsity Boys, Ryan Pope placed second in the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.69, and Nathan Mc-Adams placed third in the 300 meter hurdles running a 42.96. In relay events The Roughnecks placed second in the 4x100 meter relay finishing in 46.42, second in the 4x200 meter relay with a 1:35.21, and third in the 4x400 meter relay running a 3:43.68.

Varsity boys field events concluded with a first place finish, Ryan Pope won first place in long jump with a jump length of 21.43 feet.

“I’ve been so proud of our guys and girls tonight,” Sundown Head Boys Track Coach Kirk Rodgers said. “They have competed with a lot of courage and heart for each other. It’s fun to watch their hard work pay off.”

The Roughnecks and Roughettes will be back this week on Thursday, competing at New Deal High School.
