Roughnecks earn comeback win over Sudan, 11-9

The Sundown Roughnecks baseball team travelled to face the Sudan Hornets this past Saturday, and after trailing 4-0 early on, they’d storm back to earn an 11-9 win.

Sudan led 4-0 after the second inning, which Sundown would respond to by outscoring Sudan 8-2 in the third and fourth innings, and the two teams would break even at three runs each in the fifth and sixth innings, allowing the Roughnecks to secure the win.

The Roughnecks posted 10 hits, 11 walks and committed three errors, while the Hornets posted 13 hits, 10 walks and four errors.

At the plate, Sundown’s standouts included second baseman Joey Lopez going 3/5 with two runs-battedin, two runs scored and a double, first baseman Jaxon Reynolds going 2/3 with two walks, two stolen bases and an RBI, shortstop Ryland Baldwin going 2/2 with four stolen bases, two walks, two runs scored and a double, designated hitter Ollen Pearson going V4 with two RBI’s, a double and a stolen base, and catcher Rian Rose going 1/3 with an RBI and a walk.

On the mound for the Roughnecks, Ryan Pope pitched three innings, striking out two batters and surrendering five earned runs, Rose pitched 1.2 innings and recording three strikeouts while surrendering zero runs and two hits, Reynolds recorded an out and Baldwin pitched 1.2 innings, recording a strike out and only surrendering two hits.

“The guys did a great job competing even after being down 4-0,” Sundown Head Baseball Coach Matthew Schovajsa said. “This was good win for us going into our first district game Tuesday versus Tahoka.”

The win improves the Roughnecks to 4-5 overall, and it marks the conclusion of their non-district schedule.

They’ll face the Tahoka Bulldogs early in the week at home and then again on Saturday at Tahoka at 11 a.m.
