The Levelland varsity track programs played host for the Nelda Munoz Relays this past Friday at Lobo Stadium, competing in winds up to 30 miles per hour and persevering to still come away with several noteworthy performances.
On the Lobos side of things, Saul Hernandez shined, placing first in the boys 800-meter run with a time of 2:01.89 and first in the boys mile run with a time of 5:01.00.
In the boys discus throw, Adan Perez tied for first place with a throw of 138’ 03”, and in the boy’s pole vault, Adden Luna tied for second place with a vault of 9’.
In the boys 100-meter dash, Josh Diaz placed fourth with a time of 11.74 and Bentley Sepulbeda placed fifth with a time of 11.76.
In the boys 4x100-meter relay, the Levelland relay team of Bentley Sepulbeda, Josh Diaz, Matthew Guillen and Ayden Gutierrez placed second with a time of 45.43 In the boys 4x200-meter relay, the Levelland relay team of Bentley Sepulbeda, Guadalupe Leyva, Josh Diaz and Darren Wilson placed third with a time of 1:34.61.
In the boys 4x400-meter relay, the Levelland relay team of Ayden Gutierrez, Rene Franco, Angel Miranda and Alan Guillen placed third with a time of 3:42.58.
Powered by all those marks, the Levelland varsity boys finished third out of five teams.
“I felt our boys competed well today,” Levelland Head Boys Track Coach Pete Richardson said. “I witnessed our boys fight the wind and kept a clear mind to compete at a high level on our home turf. I’m proud of these boys and thanks for the community for coming out to support the Lobos.”
Meanwhile on the girl’s side, the 400-meter group led the way, as they had three top three finishes.
In the girls 400-meter dash, Valeria Villarreal placed first with a time of 1:04.80 and Hannah Murillo placed third with a time of 1:05.89.
Murillo would lead off and Villarreal would anchor the girls 4x400-meter relay on a relay team with Katelyn Mendoza and Darlene Pina, which placed third with a time of 4:30.
In the girls 800-meter run, Brittany Rosales dominated the field, winning first place by over four seconds with a time of 2:45.06.
In the girls 200-meter dash, Patience Pritchett placed fourth with a 29.83, and in the girls high jump, Murillo placed third with a jump of 4’10”.
In the girls triple jump, Presley Smith placed third with a jump of 32’6”, and in the girls shot put, Sydnii Joyce placed fourth with a throw of 30’8”.
Those finishes powered a fourth place finish out of five varsity girls’ teams.
“I thought we did good for the conditions we were under had a lot of wind but felt like that team completed and were making strides in the right direction,” Levelland Head Girls Track Coach Justin Turner said. “We still have a lot to build on to bring us into April, but I thought we made a big leap from week to week.”
Both teams will be back in action on Thursday for their next meet at Lamesa.
