ROUGHETTES FINISH AS STATE RUNNER-UP

The Sundown Roughettes squared off against the Shiner Lady Comanches in a one-game winner takes it all 2A Division 2 Softball State Championship game this past Thursday at Red & Charline McCombs Field in Austin, resulting in the Roughettes losing 5-2 across seven innings.

Sundown scored a run in the first inning and a run in the top of the third to take an early lead, but Shiner would respond with five unanswered runs, with two in the bottom of the third and three in the bottom of the fifth.

In the team statistics, Shiner bested Sundown 106 in hits and 2-0 in walks, while Sundown bested them 1-2 in errors committed.

Sundown’s standouts at the plate included Breigh Gregory going 2/3 with a run-batted-in, a run scored, a double and a stolen base, Destiny Garza going 1/3, Nayleen Morin going 1/3, Camry Jourden going 1/3, Emry Jourden going ¼ and Jaelyn Dominguez with a run scored.

On the mound, Breigh Gregory pitched a scoreless frame, and Destiny Garza pitched the remainder of the game, surrendering four earned runs on 10 hits. Garza delivered 62% of her pitches for strikes and Gregory delivered 56% of her pitches for strikes.

The loss concludes the Roughettes season at 30-5 overall, finishing as the State Runner-Up just a year after winning the State Championship.
