To the City of Levelland, I have lived in Hockley County for 22 years. We love our town. We shop, eat, work and go to church in Levelland. I am writing to express my concerns regarding the hosting of a drag queen show on June 26th and similar performances welcoming children and families.
I have observed that many individuals within the LGBTQ+ community have previously noted that these types of performances are intended for adult-oriented venues, not for children. I believe it is important to consider these perspectives and prioritize the protection of children from inappropriate exposure. If people of their own community are telling us not to expose our children, shouldn't we be listening.
Furthermore, I am concerned about the perceived inequality regarding the right to protest. As a Christian, I want to ensure that my voice and concerns are heard equally. Why are certain groups permitted to protest these events while others feel restricted from doing so?
I urge the city to listen to these concerns and reconsider how appropriate these events are for minors.
Matthew 18:6-7 6. Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to sin, it would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck, and he were drowned in the depth of the sea. 7. Woe to the world because of offenses! For offenses must come, but woe to that man by whom the offense comes.
Sincerely, Eva Self, a concerned Christian and follower of Christ.
PS. Drag shows are not completely illegal in Texas, but a 2023 law (Senate Bill 12) strictly restricts 'sexually oriented' performances in public or in front of minors. Also known as the 'drag ban.'
