South Plains College (SPC) assistant rodeo coach Stefan Ramone won the Stanton Special team roping event held by Matthew Land and Cattle last weekend and took home the grand prize.
The Stanton Special is a team roping event that is hosted by Matthew Land and Cattle Company from Las Vegas, New Mexico, with a high-point grand prize of a De-Ax horse trailer.
Ramone has been the assistant rodeo coach at SPC for six years and has been competing in rodeos since he was 4 years old and continued into high school, and later for SPC from 2016-2020. He is also a member of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA).
Ramone said winning is always a blessing.
“I saw a post on the internet before the roping talking about it takes one win to cancel out the losses. It felt like the last few weeks I’d been losing a little more than I’d like, so, I went into the roping just thinking rope sharp and let it play out as it will.”
Ramone said winning the Stanton Special was more special than any other rodeo because there aren’t a lot of team roping competitions where the grand prize is a horse trailer.
“Winning it was special because I’m very close friends with the producers of Matthew Land and Cattle as well as De-Ax, the company who built the trailer,” Ramone said.
After day one, Ramone was in fourth place with 16 points and on day two he rose to first with 29 points.
The South Plains College fall rodeo season begins in just about two and a half weeks. Ramone said this win could not have come at a better time.
“What better way to show the kids that you can believe in this program and what we’re building here if the assistant coach can win a trailer at that level,” Ramone said.
The SPC rodeo team will kick their season off on at the ENMU rodeo set for Sept. 17-19 in Portales, New Mexico.
After a successful 2026 spring season that included a 12th-place finish by the women’s team at the College National Finals Rodeo, the Texans will look to build momentum as they begin their fall campaign with the guidance of Ramone.
