For much of Friday night, the Morton Indians looked like it had enough on the ground to leave Brownfield with their season opener.
It just couldn’t finish.
Morton built a 26-22 lead in the third quarter, but Brownfield scored two unanswered touchdowns in the fourth quarter to rally for a 3626 win over the Indians.
Trailing 26-22, Brownfield scored two rushing touchdowns, then added a two-point conversion to take the lead and secure the win.
Head coach Trevor Bulmer reflects on his team’s start of the game as being more the issue than down the stretch.
“I think our start wasn’t very good,” Bulmer said.”Penalties and turnovers will kill offensive drives and create points for the other team.
Despite 313 total offensive yards, including 298 rushing yards on 54 carries and four touchdowns, 17 penalties for 93 yards kept the Indians from turning that production into a victory.
Turning the ball over was another crucial factor that held back the Indians from earning the victory, as they fumbled and threw an interception that set up opportunities for the Brownfield to take advantage and score.
Coming off this type of loss Bulmer is preaching to his team that the days leading up to the game are what really wins games.
“You don’t win games on Friday, you win games with your preparation,” Bulmer said. “All the prep and all the work shows up.”
The Indians look to shake off this loss versus their next opponent, the Olton Mustangs, who are coming off a 40-0 win.
This matchup will take place at 7 p.m. on Sept. 4 in Olton, and the coach knows his team is in for battle versus the Mustangs
