South Plains College continued its strong start to the fall rodeo season with another impressive weekend as the Texans and Lady Texans competed at the Clarendon College Rodeo Oct. 1-3.
South Plains athletes turned in several topfive finishes throughout the weekend, highlighted by Trevor Thompson and Hazen Lamb’s runner-up finish in team roping, Avery Henard and Kassidy Robertson’s share of third place in breakaway roping and Kameryn White’s third-place finish in barrel racing.
The Texans had a particularly strong showing in team roping, sending three SPC athletes to the Short Go.
Trevor Thompson and Hazen Lamb led the way after posting the fastest time of the First Go at 6.3 seconds. The duo followed with an 11.6-second run in the Short Go, giving them a two-run average of 17.9 seconds and a second-place finish. Thompson and Lamb each earned 150 points for their performance.
Caden Harrel, competing as a heeler, also put together another strong weekend. Harrel and his partner entered the Short Go after a 7.0-second First Go run before recording a 17.6 in the finals. Their 24.6-second average was good for fifth place overall, with Harrel earning 85 points.
The Texans also found success in steer wrestling behind Kace Hollenbach. Hollenbach qualified for the Short Go after recording an 8.4-second run in the First Go. He followed with a 9.4 in the Short Go to finish with a 17.8-second average and fourth place overall.
On the women’s side, Kassidy Robertson and Avery Henard each finished with a 5.8-second average in breakaway roping, putting both Lady Texans in a three-way split for third place.
Robertson advanced to the Short Go after stopping the clock at 2.9 seconds in the First Go. She matched that performance with another 2.9-second run in the Short Go to finish with a 5.8 average.
Henard entered the Short Go after a quick 2.6-second run in the First Go and followed with a 3.2 in the Short Go, also giving her a 5.8-second average and a share of third place.
Kameryn White added another top-three finish to her season in barrel racing. White clocked a 15.16-second run in the First Go before following with a 15.21 in the Short Go. Her two-run average of 30.37 seconds earned her third place overall and 105 points. Reata Waddington also advanced to the Short Go in goat tying after turning in a 7.0-second run in the First Go. Waddington received a no time in the Short Go and finished 10th overall.
As a team, the Texans finished the weekend with 385 points, led by Thompson and Lamb’s 150 points apiece in team roping and Harrel’s 85 points. The Lady Texans totaled 180 team points, with White contributing 105 points in barrel racing and Henard adding 75 in breakaway roping.
