The Whiteface Antelopes couldn’t overcome spotting the Kress Kangaroos three touchdowns in a 58-50 UIL high school six-man football loss last Friday. Whiteface racked up 512 yards offense against Kress’ 279 and had the ball four minutes longer and managed take a two point lead midway through the fourth quarter. The Antelopes’ last drive was stopped by an interception with 46 seconds left in the game.
The Kangaroos scored on their first possession, then recovered the kick and scored again to lead 16-0 with 4:53 left in the first quarter.
The Antelopes took over on their own 15-yard-line, working their way downfield until Jeremiah Rendon found Julio Borunda open for 10 yards and a touchdown with just 33 seconds left in the first quarter.
Damian Castaneda’s kick was good to cut the Kress lead to 16-8.
The second quarter began with Kress on the Whiteface 30yard-line and driving. Two plays later, they scored again.
The Antelopes blocked the kick for a 22-8 Kress lead with 9:29 left in the half.
The Kangaroos forced Whiteface to turn over on downs on their next possession, then scored on the first play of their drive for a 30-8 lead with 7:38 left in the half.
Whiteface finally got on the board after a long drive. Starting on the 20-yard-line after a touchback, the Antelopes worked down the field until Rendon was able to find Julio Borunda open for eight yards and a touchdown.
The kick was blocked and the score stood at 30-14 for Kress with 4:29 left in the half. The Antelopes forced Kress to turn over on downs and scored again at the buzzer to trail 30-14 at half-time. The Antelopes scored again with 3:55 left in the third quarter on a 29 yard pass from Rendon to Jeremias Chavez to cut the lead to 30-22. Kress answered on the first play of their next drive, but missed the kick for a 36-22 lead with 3:41 left. Rendon and Chavez combined again a few seconds later to make the score 36-28 for Kress with 3:17 left. Things settled a bit after that. Kress put up one more score for a 44-28 lead with 1:13 left in the third quarter. The final frame opened with a one yard touchdown from Antelope Brighton Scoggins on the second play. The kick was good for a 4436 Kress lead. A 52 yard run by Borunda at the 6:33 mark tied the score at 44, then a 15 yard run by Ethan Kauffman with 5:18 left in the game gave Whiteface a 52-50 lead. Kress took the lead back with a touchdown at the 3:37 mark and added an insurance score at the 2:23 mark. Whiteface had another chance, but their drive ended with an interception with 46 seconds left. All that remained was for Kress to take the victory formation and run out the clock. Rendon went 14-for-25 for 179 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions. Kauffman had 18 carries for 163 yards and a touchdown. Borunda had seven catches for 131 yards and two touchdowns.
Gavin Baker had a 21 yard run. Scoggins had four runs for nine yards and a touchdown.
Rendon had a single seven yard run and Jaxon Heflin had a two yard run. Borunda had six catches for 70 yards and two touchdowns.
Chavez had five catches for 66 yards and two touchdowns. Scoggins had a 44 yard catch.
Beau Brewer had a seven yard snag and Ethan Kauffman had a catch for minus eight yards.
Scoggins had six tackles. Borunda had 5 ½. Auscar Gandara had five. Chavez had 4 ½. Kauffman had four and Rendon had three. Castenada went 4-for-7 for extra-point kicks. Baker had three kick returns for 13 yards. The Antelopes host Springlake-Earth Friday at 7:30.
