The Smyer Bobcats fell behind in the first quarter and were never able to catch up as they lost to the Seagraves Eagles 42-24 in UIL Class 2A-2, Region I, District 4 high school football action last Friday. “We made too many mistakes on our special teams that we weren’t able to overcome,” said Smyer Head Coach Scott Funke.
Smyer dropped to 1-3 in district and traveled to Plains on Thursday, which decided the playoff fate of both teams. “The Plains game becomes a de facto playoff game as we need to win to be in (the playoffs),” said Funke. Seagraves took a 7-0 lead off a 27-yard pass from Jace Humphries to Bradlee Lemon at the 9:48 mark in the first quarter to cap the opening possession.
Smyer responded with a 65yard drive that ended with a oneyard touchdown run from Preston Moore. Shawn Barrett ran the two-point conversion in for an 8-7 Smyer lead with seven minutes left in the first quarter.
The Eagles, however, scored again on their next drive, then intercepted Landon Polk and ran the ball to the Smyer 21.
Two plays later, Aiden Rodriguez crossed the goal-line and Julian Munoz ran the twopoint conversion in for a 21-8 Seagraves lead with just seconds left in the first quarter.
The two teams traded touchdowns in the second quarter with Seagraves going up 29-8 at the 7:22 mark and Smyer answering with a four-yard touchdown from Barrett and a two-point conversion from Moore to cut the Eagles’ lead to 29-16 with 3:51 left in the half.
Two unanswered scores from Seagraves in the third quarter sealed the Bobcats’ fate. Smyer put one more score up in the fourth quarter.
