The Anton Lady Bulldogs relied on a strong third quarter to take a 45-39 come from behind win from the host Morton Maidens in UIL district 7-1A high school girls’ basketball on Tuesday, January 17.
Morton led 14-8 at the end of the first quarter and 24-19 at halftime.
The Lady Bulldogs stepped up in the third quarter, taking a 31-29 lead at the buzzer, then working that lead through the fourth.
Andie Alonzo led the Lady Bulldogs with 12 points. Bridget Thomas had 11. Takyra Goree had nine. Alyssa Mancias had eight points. Sarah Carlisle had three. Milania Castillo had two.
For Morton, Kayleigh Boggs and Malory Alvarez had nine points each. Lali Navarett had eight. Chloe Enriquez and Clarissa Holland had four each. Alexiah Garza and Destiny Viscarra had two each. Amberlynne Hernandez had one.
The Maidens will be in Amherst for a 6:30 p.m. district game on Friday.
Indians
The Morton Indians were able to build on an early lead on their way to a 74-57 home win over the Anton Bulldogs in UIL district 7-1A high school basketball action on Tuesday, January 17.
The Indians led 25-18 at the end of the first quarter and 45-36 at half-time. The third quarter score saw Morton up 63-49.
Morton’s Alex Lopez led all scorers with 21 points. Vicente Montoya had 11. Lane Lyon, Anibal Casteneda and Juan Rincon had eight each.
Cade Lyon and Xavier Ramon had five points apiece. A.J. Mendoza had four. Andres Bejarno had two.
Gavin Martinez and Joe Whillock led the Bulldogs with 13 points each. Jose Avalos had 10. Gage Garcia had nine. Lano Castillo had seven and Zian Martinez had five.
The Indians will be in Amherst on Friday while the Bulldogs travel to Whiteface. Both games are at 8 p.m.
Lady Cats
The Smyer Lady Cats took a 58-30 loss from the New Deal Lady Lions in UIL district 4-2A high school girls’ basketball action on Tuesday, January 17.
New Deal was up 20-10 in the first quarter and 31-21 at half-time. The score at the end of three put the Lady Lions ahead 43-26 Rylee Riedel had 10 points for the Lady Cats. Vannah Jourdan had seven. Dyamond Baker had four. Kristen Gonzales and Ella Kirkland had three each. Valeria Juarez had two and Mollie Norman had a single free-throw.
The Lady Cats will be in Hale Center on Friday for a 6:15 p.m. game.
Bobcats
The Smyer Bobcats went on the road Tuesday, January 17, taking a 79-57 loss to the state ranked New Deal Lions in UIL district 4-2A high school boys’ basketball action.
New Deal, ranked 15th in Class 2A by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches, jumped out to a 24-16 lead at the end of the first quarter and led 44-30 at half-time.
The third quarter score was New Deal 63, Smyer 42.
Shawn Barrett led the Bobcats with 19 points. Landon Polk had 16. Ethan Morris had nine. Cameron Gutierrez had five. Jordan Bartlett and Micah Zapata had three each. Brayden Wade had a pair of free-throws.
The Bobcats will be in Hale Center on Friday for a 7:30 p.m. game.
LadyLopes
The Whiteface Lady Lopes, ranked 14th in Class 1A by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches, dominated the Meadow Lady Broncos in a 69-11 UIL district 7-1A road win on Tuesday, January 17.
Whiteface led 29-6 at the end of the first period. The Lady Lopes slowed a bit after that, but it never got any better for Meadow.
Whiteface led 42-6 at halftime and 60-7 at the end of the third quarter.
Allison Martha had 14 points. Emma Ayers and Tymmyah Olenga had 12 points each. Jaedyn Rector had nine. Ximena Lucero and Morgan Waggoner had six apiece. Ariana and Anais Soliz had four each. Kylie Deavours and Abi Soliz had two apiece.
The Lady Lopes will host Anton on Friday at 6:30 p.m.
Antelopes
The Whiteface Antelopes buried the Meadow Broncos in the third period, then added some insurance in the fourth on their way to a 60-46 road win in UIL district 7-1A high school boys basketball action on Tuesday, January 17.
Whiteface led 14-11 at the end of the first period and only 28-26 at half-time.
The Antelopes jumped out to a commanding 42-32 lead in the third period then added some padding in the fourth.
Jeremias Chavez led all scorers with 22 points. Brighton Scoggins had 17. Ethan Kauffman had eight. Jeremiah Rendon had six points. Jaime Flores had five. Noah Rector had two.
The Antelopes will host the Anton Bulldogs on Friday at 8 p.m.
Lady Panthers
The Whitharral Lady Panthers high school girls’ basketball team eked out a 43-41 road win over the Amherst Lady Bulldogs on Tuesday, January 17.
The official varsity score is a forfeit as the Lady Panthers are playing a junior varsity schedule due to lack of numbers.
Whitharral started with a 7-0 run on their way to a 13-8 lead at the end of the first quarter.
They led by as much as 21-12 in the second and took a 21-17 lead into the half-time locker room.
The Lady Bulldogs came out firing in the third quarter, taking a 33-27 lead by the end of the period.
Whitharral trailed by as much as nine in the fourth period, but battle back, tying the score on a basket from Avery McCain and took the lead on a basket from Elizabeth Reyna within the last minute of play.
McCain was the leading scorer and rebounder with a double-double – 21 points and 10 rebounds. She also had an assist.
Madi Chavez had 11 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Reyna had six points and two rebounds. Tyler Parkinson had three points and two assists. Trinity Coronado had two points, two rebounds and an assist. Kalyn Bates had five rebounds and two assists. Madyson Nickelson had a rebound.
The Lady Panthers will host the New Home junior varsity at 5 p.m. on Friday.
Panthers
The Whitharral Panthers returned to their winning ways with a 58-30 road win over the Amherst Bulldogs in UIL district 7-1A high school boys’ basketball on Tuesday, January 17.
Whitharral took a 12-7 lead at the end of the first quarter, with nine points coming from Kaden Smith. Smith had another 10 of the 20 points scored by Whitharral in the second quarter and scored 29 overall to lead all scorers.
The Panthers led 32-17 at half-time and 43-24 at the end of three periods.
Jeryn Ellerd was the number two scorer for the Panthers with 14 points. Brent Robinson had six. Jarrett Fryar had five points. Nomar Gomez and Dawson Rodgers had two each.
The Panthers will host Cotton Center at 8 p.m. on Friday.
