The Levelland Lobos kicked off district play in Perryton against the Rangers where they picked up their first loss of district play, 41-18.
The Lobos defense was shocked going into the game as they allowed the Perryton offense to score in only two plays into the game, which was capped off of a two-yard run from the Rangers.
From there, the Lobos offense would go three and out giving the ball back to the explosive Ranger offense. The Lobo defense had a hard time as they allowed the Rangers to score again off of eight plays.
The Levelland offense would stall out again as they had a good productive drive going but would end on a interception thrown by Boston Winfield on the drive.
With the turnover, the Perryton offense was able to respond once again where they would throw a deep pass to get the team another touchdown on the night making the score 21-0, with 4:20 left in the first quarter.
The Lobos finally found some momentum going as they had a scoring drive in just two plays thanks to the great play from Winfield and his receiver Ben Alvarado who took the pass 67 yards to the house. The team would miss the extra point making the score 21-6.
Going into the second quarter, Perryton would start off with the ball, but the Lobo defense would come in strong as the ball was intercepted by Alvarado where he would give the Lobos offense another chance on offense.
The offense for the Lobos did not disappoint as they were able to get another touchdown through the air off of a 16-yard pass from Winfield to Gage Potter to stay in the game making the score 21-12 after they missed their second PAT of the game.
Perryton continued their great play by scoring another touchdown on the night coming off of another run from seven yards out. The Ranger offense was able to have their way with the Lobo defense and extended their lead 28-12, before going into halftime with all the momentum on their side.
From then on it was a very defensive game as both offenses seemed to stall out. However, Levelland was able to get one more touchdown and Perryton would be able to add another two touchdowns on the night.
The final score of the game was 41-18 as the Lobo defense wasnt able to get ahold of the Ranger offense and the Lobo offense wasnt able to out-gun the Ranger defense.
The Lobos run game was having a hard time finding a rhythm as they would have Ricky Rodriguez lead the team on the ground with 34 yards on eight attempts on the night. Jake Potter was able to get another 31 yards for the team off of seven carries.
Winfield would have a tough night as he went 11-18 on passing with 121 yards through the air on two touchdowns and two interceptions. Rusty Johnson would get a couple of snaps at quarterback in the game going 1-4 through the air with one touchdown and one interception on the night for 11 yards total.
Leading the team in receptions was Potter who had five catches for 41 yards. Alvarado would have two catches on the night that went for 80 yards and a touchdown. Gage Potter would get one reception for 16 yards and a touchdown for the Lobos passing game. And Mark Buxkemper would be able to catch one pass for 11 yards and touchdown on the night.
The Lobo defense was having a rough night as they would allow147 rushing yards on the night while they got hit over the top for another 220 yards. They allowed a total of 367 yards throughout the game. The Lobo offense wasnt able to keep up with the Rangers as they would only tally up a total of 191 yards of total offense for the game.
The Lobos will progress to 25 in the year while being 0-1 in district play as the Perryton Rangers will move to 2-5 on their year while starting 1-0 in district play.
Levelland will play against the Canyon West Plains this Friday at home at 7 p.m. West Plains is coming into the game against the Lobos with a record of 6-1 with their only loss coming from Bushland early on in the season with a score of 47-41. The Lobos have a tough task up ahead but will see how they matchup with the team this Friday.
