Eagles handle Indians 54-6, at Morton

The Ropes Eagles took a 546 UIL 2A-2 District 4 High school Football win over the Morton Indians last Friday.

Both teams had trouble with turnovers. Ropes suffered three interceptions, while the Indians suffered three interceptions plus a lost fumble.

The Ropes defense was able to shut Morton down for the most part, holding the Indians to just 54 yards total offense.

The Eagles also enjoyed a short field, usually starting in Morton territory and racking up 435 yards.

Morton was forced to punt on their first possession. Ropes took over on the 50-yard line, scoring on the fourth play from scrimmage – a five-yard run by Bregg Feldman.

Morton punted on the second drive, giving Ropes the ball on the Morton 42. That drive resulted in a Morton interception, but the Indians were unable to capitalize.

They turned over on downs and allowed the Eagles to take over on the Morton 37-yard line.

That Ropes drive went into the second quarter and resulted in another touchdown for a 14-0 Ropes lead with 11:26 left in the first half.

The Eagles intercepted Morton on the second play of the next drive, taking over on the Morton 40-yard line and scoring on a 25-yard run by Kade Franklin.

The Eagles’ kick pinned Morton on the 10-yard line. An offsides penalty against Ropes put the Indians on the 20-yard line with a first down, but four plays later, they were forced to punt and Ropes took over on the Morton 35-yard line.

The Eagles’ drive ended with an interception on the Morton 17yard line, but Ropes repaid the favor on the second play of Morton’s resulting drive.

The Eagles took over on their own 47-yard line with 4:36 remaining in the half. A six-yard run followed by a two-yard run by Hayden Torres set up a 45yard touchdown pass from Kade Franklin to Reese Williams for a 28-0 Ropes lead with 3:49 left in the half.

The next three drives resulted in a lost fumble from Morton, an interception suffered by Ropes and a punt from the Indians.

That gave Ropes the ball on the Morton 37-yard line with 1:27 left in the half. The Indians found themselves facing second down and 17 on the Morton 20-yard line with just 11 seconds left in the half, so Ropes attempted a field goal.

Williams had made a field goal from that distance last week against Smyer, but this time the Indians were able to block the kick and the half ended with Ropes up 28-0.

Ropes made the score 34-0 on the first drive of the second half. Morton was again forced t p punt, but the Indian defense returned the favor.

Morton’s only score came on the next drive. Taking over on their own 16-yard line, the Indians combined runs with passes to march downfield, ending the drive with a five-yard run from Dante Chavez to cut the Ropes lead to 34-6 with 3:42 left in the third quarter.

After that it was all Ropes. The Eagles scored once more in the third and twice in the fourth quarter while the Indians were unable to get anything else going.

The Eagles are now 4-3 and will host Seagraves at 7 p.m. next Friday. Morton falls to 4-3 and will travel to Smyer on Friday at 7 p.m.
