Morton downs Lockney, at Hereford

The Morton Indians traveled to Hereford last Thursday to take their first playoff win since 2011 with a 31-22 UIL Class 2A-2 Bi-District High School Football win over the Lockney Longhorns.

Morton’s Defensive Coordinator Trevor Bulmer was the KCBD Television Assistant Coach of the Week.

His defense forced two interceptions and a fumble as well as holding Lockney to 0-for-9 on third down conversions and only 59 yards passing.

The game was close throughout the entire night.

Lockney drew first blood of the night from a long pass play.

Morton didn’t go away so easily as they scored quickly on a pass from Dante Chavez to Cade Lyon from 17 yards out.

They took the lead from a good two-point conversion making the score 8-7 at the end of the first quarter.

That was all the scoring from the first half. It was a defensive battle from both teams with Morton leading by one at halftime.

The scoring drought ended when Lockney put together a drive, punching in the run from four yards out and making the score 14-8 after another successful kick.

Christain Enriquez returned the lead to Morton by busting out a 52-yard run to give the Indians the lead, 16-14.

Lockney still did not give up as they punched out another short run, this time from three yards out with another successful two-point conversion.

Lockney lead at the end of the third quarter 22-16.

The fourth quarter was all Morton as they were able to get another touchdown on the ground thanks to Chavez’s legs taking it 28 yards to the endzone and getting their two-point conversion for a 24-22 late in the fourth quarter.

Morton sealed Lockney’s fate when Enriquez was able to bust another big run on the night from 59 yards out and a good kick late in the fourth.

Morton’s run game and defense was good enough for the 31-22 win.

The Morton offense rolled to 471 total yards with 107 of those yards were through the air while the rest of the 364 yards came from the teams ground game.

Morton’s leading rusher was Chavez who had 201 yards with one touchdown.

Running back Christain Enriquez had another 158 yards on the ground with another two touchdowns.

Quarterback Chavez went 10-for-17 for 107 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions.

Chavez was able to spread the wealth. The leading receiver was E.J. Rivas with four catches for 39 yards.

Lane Lyon was second with three catches and 26 yards, Enriquez had a catch for 19 yards and Cade Lyon had one catch for 17 yards and a touchdown.

The Indian defense was able to force three turnovers on the night with two interceptions and once forced fumble.

Jaeden Alvarado and Brayden Villarreal were able to each get an interception while Villarreal was able to recover a Lockney fumble on the field in the win.

The duo also led the team in tackling as Alvarado was able to secure five tackles with seven assists and Villerreal racked up three tackles with eight assists.

Alex Lopez was able to get three tackles with one assist, Hezekiah Silvas had two tackles with 10 assists, A.J. Mendoza had two tackles, Rivas with another tackle, Lane Lyon had one tackle with 13 assists, Cade Lyon had one tackle with 10 assists and Andres Bejarano had one tackle with six assists, one sack and one tackle for loss.

Morton allowed the Longhorns only 296 yards of total offense.

Morton had 11 flags thrown for 20 yards in the game compared to Lockney’s seven for 51 yards on the night.

The Indians keep their playoff dreams alive as they will play against the Wellington Skyrockets at Happy State Bank Stadium in Canyon this Thursday at 4 p.m.
