Morton Indians dominate Tahoka Tournament

The Morton Indians traveled to Tahoka for a tournament where they the team went 3-1 with their only loss coming from the Grady Wildcats.

In the team’s first game of the tournament the team faced off against the New Deal Lions.

Going into the game the Indians were trailing early in the game with the score 11-10.

Although they were trailing early in the first quarter they turned it up in the second quarter outscoring the Lions 15-10 and taking the lead going into the break 25-21.

Out of the halftime break though it was a close game once more with New Deal outscoring Morton by one point in the third quarter. The Indians still had the lead going into the fourth, but it was a close game nonetheless with Morton up 37-34.

The game came down to the wire twice as Morton was finally able to take down New Deal in double overtime winning the game 58-56.

The leading scorer for the Indians against New Deal was Alex Lopez and E.J. Rivas who had 11 points a piece. Anibal Casteneda had eight points, A.J. Mendoza and Lane Lyon each had seven a piece, Cade Lyon had six points, Zeph Silvas had four and Brayden Villarreal and Jaeden Alvarado finished the game with two.

With their win over the Lions they moved on to face the Tahoka Bulldogs where they won 46-32.

In the first half of the game both teams were having a hard time getting the edge on each other as it was a tied game at the half with both teams at 13.

Coming out of the break though, it was all Morton as they were able to pull away in the third quarter outscoring Tahoka 17-10 and grabbing the lead 30-23.

The Indians finally closed the game out in the end as they would not slow down as they scored another 16 points in the fourth compared to Tahoka’s nine.

Leading the team in scoring for Morton was Lopez who had 11 for the team with six of those points coming in the fourth quarter.

Mendoza, Cade Lyon and Villarreal all finished with six on the game, Rivas had five, Casteneda had four, Silvas and Lane Lyon both had three a piece and Alvarado finished with two in the game.

Knocking off two of the first two teams in the Tournament Morton had to face off against the Grady Wildcats in the third round where they picked up their first loss of the tournament., they lost 40-32.

Going into the first quarter the team led against Grady 12-9 due to their hard nose offense and attacking the basket early on in the game.

In the second quarter they werent able to find the bottom of the basket as they allowed the Wildcats to score 12 points in the quarter while they were only able to get two points.

The Indians were going into the halftime break, 21-14.

Going into the third quarter the team was finally able to get a groove going but not able to stop Grady as they were outscored once again 11-10 keeping the game close. Morton was trailing 32-24.

The fourth quarter was all defense once again though as both teams were only able to score eight points, but it was enough to hold off the Indians.

The leading scorer for Morton was Rivas who finished their game against Grady with 12 points.

Mendoza finished with eight on the night, Lopez had four and four Indians finished with two points on the day with Casteneda, Cade Lyon, Silvas and Bejarano.

Finishing off their tournament the Morton Indians went against the Sudan Hornets where the team won 48-31.

The first quarter of the game was a very tight competition as Morton led Sudan 7-5 early on.

The second quarter was all Morton as they could not be stopped as they had scored 24 points while only allowing Sudan to 12.

Morton went into the halftime break with a decent lead 31-17.

The Indians coming out of the break were showing pure concetration as they wanted to end the game quick and did so, as they held control of the game to end their tournament on a victory over the Hornets.

The Morton Indians finished off their tournament well and will have another tournament this weekend where they will face-off against Euince to kick it off. The Indians have progressed to 4-3 on the year.
