The Sundown Roughettes competed in the Littlefield Tournament last week where they finished off 3-1 throughout the week.
The first game of the tournament the girls lost to the Portales Lady Rams from New Mexico with a score of 66-33.
The first quarter of the game was a clear indicator that it was going to be a long day as Portales outscored Sundown 18-9 in the first taking a big lead.
The second quarter of the game was more of the same story as Sundown was outscored once again 22-to-12 as they trailed by even more going into the break. The score at the end of the second quarter was Portales leading 40-21.
For the Roughettes the leading scorer at the half was Allie McCormick who had 13 points, six of them coming from behind the arch.
The third quarter wasnt pretty for the Roughette’s offense as they were only able to put up four points in the third while allowing another 14 by the Lady Ram offense.
For the fourth quarter of play Portales was able to put the game away by outscoring Sundown 12to-8 and winning the game 66-33 for their first game of the tournament.
The leading scorer for the Roughettes was McCormick as she finished with 21 points in the game.
Kyndal Taggart finished with four, two Roughettes finished with three points a piece in Camry Jourden and Hannah Holdman and Kadee Riley finished the game off with two.
After this loss to a good team, Sundown wouldnt lose for their next three games of the tournament.
Sundown’s next game of the tournament was against the Pecos Lady Eagles where they had a great bounce back win with the score of 63-26.
The first quarter of the game started off slow for the Roughettes as they were outscored by one point as Pecos took a small lead at the end of the first with the score at 14-13.
The second quarter Sundown would kick things up as they would outscore the Lady Eagles 21-to-5 and take a huge lead going into the the halftime break with the score at 34-19.
In the second half of the game it would be all Sundown again as they were able to outscore the Pecos Lady Eagles 28-to-7 including a shutout in the fourth quarter.
For the Roughettes it would be McCormick once more that led the team in scoring as she finished the game with 29 points.
Taggart was able to get 10 to go, two Roughettes were able to get seven more for the team in Jourden and Holdman, Yaya Lopez and Aubrey Rodgers would both get two a piece and Talia Acevedo would have one in the teams win.
The girls shot well in their game as they shot 36% from the field and 20% from behind the arch, but shot well from the charity stripe as they went for 70% in the game.
The Roughettes would outdo the Lady Eagles on the boards as they went earned themselves 43 rebounds compared to Pecos’s 34.
Sundown’s defense would be a lot better as they were able to force 40 turnovers in the game while only giving the ball up 22 times in the game.
For the Roughettes third game of the tournament they had to face off against the Olton Phillies where they won 55-34 in a commanding game.
The first quarter of the game started off a very defensive game as neither team was able to get the edge on one another. The score at the end of the first quarter was all tied up at six a piece.
The second quarter for both teams was high scoring as Sundown allowed 13 points in the second while scoring their own 23 and taking a 10 point lead going into the break.
The score at the half was Sundown leading 29-19.
The Roughettes in the third quarter of the game wouldnt be able to do much as both teams would be snuffed at eight points a piece and Sundown still leading 37-27.
The fourth quarter was once again where Sundown would get rolling as they were able to outscore the Phillies 18-to-7 and take the convincing win 55-34.
The leading scorer for the Roughettes was McCormick as she finished with 16.
Taggart had nine, Jourden had eight and three Roughettes finished with six including Lopez, Holdman and Acevedo, Riley also finished with four in the teams win.
For the teams final game of the tournament they faced off against the Tulia Lady Hornets where they won 50-39.
The first quarter of the game was a close one but ended with Sundown leading by two with the score of 14-12 at the end of the first.
The second quarter was all Sundown once more as they were able to outscore the Lady Hornets 17-to-7 and taking a great lead going into the halftime break with the score at 31-19.
Going into the third quarter of the game it was more of the same for Sundown as they were able to go on a big 16-to-8 run to extend their lead going into the fourth making the score 47-27.
The fourth quarter wasnt pretty for the Roughettes as they were finally outscored 12-to-3, but it was too little too late for Tulia as the Roughettes were able to win out for their final contest of the tournament.
McCormick was able to get 27 points in the teams win.
Lopez had another 12, Holdman had six, two Roughettes had two points a piece in Riley and Taggart and Jourden finished the game with one point.
Sundown finished off the tournament going 3-1 while going 11-10 on the season in nondistrict play. The Roughettes played against the New Home Lady Leapords this past Tuesday as the home team to kick off district play.
