Bobcats fall to Whirlwinds at home

The Smyer Bobcats took on the Floydada Whirlwinds this past Friday at home where the team fell 68-42.

The game started off with Floydada taking a big lead in the first quarter as they outscored the Bobcats 16-to-8 going into the second quarter.

The second quarter of the game was almost a copy and paste of the first quarter as the Bobcats would once again put up another eight points in the quarter while they gave up another 15 to Floydada.

Going into the halftime break the Floydada Whirlwinds led Smyer 31-16.

Micah Zapata for the Bobcats would lead the team in scoring at the half with five points, three of them coming from the first quarter off of a long range deep ball.

For the start of the third quarter Smyer’s offense would find a rhythm as they would be able to put up 12 points in the third. Unfortunately for them their defense couldnt stop the Whirlwind offense as they gave up another 22 trailing Floydada even more going into the fourth.

For the final quarter of play Floydada would outscore Smyer once again 15-to-14 and take the win away from the Bobcats.

Leading the team in scoring for the Bobcats was Zapata as he had 14 points on the night with seven of those points coming from the fourth quarter of play.

Ryann Gutierrez finished with seven points in the game, Brayden Wade had six, Rylan Smith had five, Gio Garcia had three, and two Bobcats finished with two points in Micah Stevens and Mason Medart.

The Bobcats shot for 33% from the field while going 26% from beyond the arch against the Whirlwinds. The team also shot for 62% from the charity stripe throughout the night.

The Bobcats were outdone on the boards as they allowed Floydada to pull down 43 while they were able to get their hands on 30 of their own.

For the turnover battle Smyer fell short as they were able to force nine turnovers on the night but gave the ball up another 18 throughout the game.

As for blocks on the game Smyer was able to get one from Zapata while Floydada was able to get three throughout the night in their battle.

Smyer falls to 3-14 on the year while going 0-3 in district play.

The Bobcats next game will be against the Ralls Jackrabbits this Friday at home at 7:30 p.m.
