Lady Eagles come back over Cowgirls

The Ropes Lady Eagles came from behind for a hard fought 4336 win over the visiting Plains Cowgirls January 5 in UIL District 5-1A high school girls’ basketball action.

The Lady Eagles found themselves down 13-4 at the end of the first quarter. The only Ropes scoring came from two baskets by Madi Reyna, whose staunch work under the basket buttressed the Ropes’ win.

The second quarter saw the Lady Eagles work back into the game. A basket from Campbell Latta, followed by two from Reyna and a put back from Delyla Stark gave Ropes a 9-0 run, tying the game at 13 with 2:21 left in the half.

Plains replied with a basket from Lana Bell with an additional free throw for a 16-13 lead with two minutes on the clock. Reyna hit another basket from the pain at 1:41 to get within a point.

A free throw from Reyna Diamond made the score 17-15 for Plains with 1:12 left in the second period.

Stark hit a free throw to get the Lady Eagles within a point with just 56 second left in the first half.

Then, with just 10 seconds left, Aubrey Bandy hit a basket to take an 18-17 Ropes lead into halftime.

The third quarter was scoreless for the first minute and a half. Analysa Gomez hit a free throw to tie the score with 6:34 left on the clock.

A minute later Reyna put the Lady Eagles up 20-18, but that was answered a few second later by Cowgirl Lily Davis with her third and last trey of the night.

A basket from Ava Garcia at 4:13 put the Cowgirls up 23-20, but Bailey Turner tied the score at 23 with a trey at the 3:14 mark in the third quarter.

Latta made the score 25-23 for Ropes with 30 seconds left in the period.

The Cowgirls’ final score of the quarter came from two free throws by Bell with just seconds left for a 25-25 tie.

The fourth quarter saw the teams going back and forth.

The Cowgirls went up 30-25 on a basket from Reagan Guerra at the beginning of the quarter and a putback with a free throw from Guerra at 6:44.

A trey from Bandy cut the Plains lead to 30-28. Guerra hit a basket to put Plains up 32-28 at the 5:47 mark.

A free thrown from Latta cut the Plains lead to 32-29 at 5:38. Plains scored back to back baskets with just under five minutes to extend the lead to 3629, but a trey from Bandy, two free throws from Stark and a basket from Reyna tied the score at 36 with just 1:56 left.

Thirty seconds later Bandy made the score 38-36, giving the Lady Eagles the final lead.

Ropes scored the final five points on a free throw from Stark and baskets from Latta and Turner.

Reyna led the Lady Eagles’ scoring with 14 points. Bandy had 10. Stark and Latta had seven each and Turner had five.

The Lady Eagles will be in Sundown this Friday at 6 p.m.
