The Morton Indians took on the Amherst Bulldogs this past Friday at home for district play in basketball where the team won 54-34.
The first quarter of the game started off well for the Indians as they came into the game firing on all cylinders with five players were able to get started in scoring for Morton as they were able to hold Amherst to 16. The score heading into the second quarter of play was Morton narrowly winning 17-16.
For the second quarter of play the Indians kept pouring it on as they were able to get another 16 points to drop for them while they only let up five points from Amherst before the break.
The score at the halftime break was Morton winning 33-21 after a great second quarter.
The leading scorer at the half for the Indians was Alex Lopez who had 10 points, six of them coming from the mid-range and paint.
Going into the third quarter of play the Indians did not let off of the gas as they outscored the Bulldogs 13-5 extending their lead to 20 going into the fourth quarter.
For the final quarter of play Morton was able to keep the lead on Amherst though they were only able to get six points in their district win over the Bulldogs.
Leading the team in scoring for the Indians on the night was Lopez as he finished with 17 points, 10 of them coming from the paint.
Cade Lyon was the only other Indian to finish with double digit points as he had 14 in the teams win.
Lane Lyon finished with eight, A.J. Mendoza and E.J. Rivas both had four a piece, Jaeden Alvarado had three and Zeph Silvas and Jorge Bejarano both had two each in the teams win.
The Morton Indians progressed to 17-8 in season play while going up to 5-2 in district play sitting in second place only behind Whitharral.
The Indians next game is against the Lubbock Titans next Tuesday at home at 6:15 p.m.
