The Whitharral Panthers hosted the Anton Bulldogs for district play in basketball where they won 71-40.
From the jump the game was all Whitharral as they were able to outscore the Bulldogs 21-12 and take the big nine point lead going into the second quarter.
For the second quarter of play the Panther offense didn’t slow down as they were able to put up another 21 points while their defense stifled the Anton offense holding them to just two points before the halftime break.
The score at the end of the half was Whitharral leading Anton 42-14.
Leading the Bulldogs in scoring at the half was Shooter Campos as he was able to get six points to fall for him.
For the Panthers it was Nomar Gomez who would lead the team in scoring at the half with 11 points.
Going into the third quarter of play Anton was the ones coming in hot as they would put together a good 12 point run while holding the Panthers to 10 going into the fourth quarter of play. The score at the end of the third was Whitharral leading 5226.
For the final quarter of play Whitharral put the explanation point on the game as they outscored Anton 19-14 to take the district win.
Leading the team in scoring for Whitharral would be Gomez as he had 19 points on the night not slowing down all game long.
Three more players from Whitharral was in double digits with Nate Sansom going for 14, Jack Griffin going for 12 and Brolin Kennedy finishing with 10. Landon Lee had eight, Damian Rodriguez had six and Rayden Potter had two in the team’s win.
For the Bulldogs, leading the team in scoring for the night was Jose Avalos as he had 15 points at the end of their contest.
Campos finished the night with 12, Gavin Martinez had eight, Caleb Carlock had three and Mason Anderson finished the game with two in the team’s tough loss.
The Whitharral Panthers progress to 19-4 on the season while staying undefeated in district play with a perfect 8-0 record sitting at the top in district.
For Anton they slip to 6-9 on the season while falling to 2-4 in district play.
The Panthers next game of district play is against the Amherst Bulldogs this upcoming Friday as the visiting team at 6:30 p.m.
The Bulldogs next game in district is against the Meadow Broncos this Tuesday as the away team at 7:30 p.m.
