Lobos survive Mustangs

The Levelland Lobos took on the Sweetwater Mustangs this past Tuesday at home for district play in basketball where the team won 63-61 in a thriller.

The first quarter was close as neither team was pulling away and both were keeping up with teach other going blow for blow. The score at the end of the first quarter had Levelland trailing the Mustangs 21-20.

The second quarter was more of the same for the Lobos as they were trying their best to hold off the Sweetwater offense. The team was about to go into the halftime trailing the Mustangs 3129, but Lobo Jayden Castillo had his own plans as he hit a step back three to give the Lobos the lead and momentum going into the half.

For the Lobos the leading scorer at the half was Castillo as he had 14 points, eight of them coming from inside the paint. The game was getting chippy as some of the fans from the Sweetwater stands were thrown out of the game due to them mouthing off to the refs.

Going into the third quarter of play Levelland would have a hot streak as they were able to outscore Sweetwater 18-13 extending their lead going into the fourth quarter of play. Castillo was carrying the load in the third as he had 14 of the teams 18 points.

For the final quarter of play Levelland was able to hold off the Mustangs as they gave their best effort on defense to take the big district win over the Mustangs.

Leading the team in scoring was Castillo as he had 35 points on the night, with 16 of those points coming from inside the paint.

Eryk Jones had another 13 for the team, Sean Landrum had six, Elijah Jordan had four and both Travion Holland and Ozzie Solano had three in the teams win. Levelland was out rebounded throughout the night against the Mustangs 37-to-36. Levelland would shoot the ball for a good 50% on the night from the field while going 28% from long range. From the free throw line the team would also shoot 7-for-14 on the night getting themselves exactly to 50%.

Levelland progresses to 1316 on the season while going up to 4-2 in district play sitting in third place behind Sweetwater and Estacado.

The Lobos next game in district is against the San Angelo Lake View Chiefs this Tuesday at home at 7:30 p.m.
