Sundown falls to Seagraves on Senior Night

The Sundown Roughnecks took on the Seagraves Eagles this past Friday at home for district basketball play where the team lost 54-49.

The first quarter of the game started off with Seagraves taking an early lead in the game to lead the Roughnecks 11-9 going into the second quarter of play.

The second quarter of the game is where Sundown found their feet as they were able to put up 20 points before the halftime break while letting up another 17 points to the Eagles.

The score at the end of the half was Sundown holding the narrow lead 29-28.

Leading the Roughnecks in scoring at the half was Jayson Martinez who had eight points at the half with all of them coming from inside the paint.

Going into the third quarter of play the Roughnecks were struggling to have the success on the offensive side of the ball like in the second quarter as they were outscored 13-9 going into the fourth quarter of the game trailing 41-38.

For the final quarter of play Sundown wasn’t able to get back into the game as they could not stop the Eagles offense from driving inside of the paint as Seagraves was able to get eight of their 13 points from inside of the paint while Sundown was only able to get 11 more points before the end of the game.

Leading the team in scoring for the Roughnecks was Martinez as he finished with 16 points throughout the night, 12 of them coming from under the basket.

Kye Powell finished the game with 14 points, Jaxon Rodriguez, Adan Escamilla and Branson Sanders all finished with five points against Seagraves and Briar Miller finished with four in the teams loss.

Sundown trailed in the rebound category as they were outdone 44-to-33 on the night.

The Roughnecks shot for 37% from the field while going 40% from beyond the arch. They also shot the ball for 54% from the free throw line picking up an extra seven points throughout the game.

Although the team lost they were able to win the turnover battle as they were able to force 23 in the game while only giving up 17 in their contest.

The team falls to 7-15 on the season while slipping to 2-5 in district play.

The Roughnecks next game will be against the Plains Cowboys this Friday as the visiting team at 6:15 p.m.
