The Whiteface Antelopes hosted the Whitharral Panthers this past Friday for district basketball play where the team won 56-50.
The first quarter of the game had the Antelopes coming out hot on Senior Night as it was senior Jeremias Chavez who had six points of the teams 15 in the first quarter to get things started while the Panthers Nomar Gomez had seven of his teams nine to keep them in the game.
For the second quarter of play Whiteface would outscore Whitharral once more 12-11 to hold the narrow lead going into the quarter as the Antelopes kept their high paced offense running all game long in the first half.
The score at the halftime break had Whiteface leading Whitharral 27-20.
Leading the Antelopes in scoring at the half was Chavez as he had 11 points, 10 of them coming from underneath the basket.
For the Panthers the leading scorer at the half was Gomez as he had 10 points at the half with six of them coming from long range.
Going into the third quarter of play Whitharral would still struggle to hold the Whiteface offense as they would allow 15 more points to be put up in the third while getting another nine points of their own to fall going into the fourth quarter of play.
The score heading into the fourth quarter was Whiteface leading 42-29.
Although the Antelopes had everything going for the, for the final quarter of play Whitharral would come alive as they went on a 21 point run to give Whiteface a scare at the end. Unfortunately it was too little too late as Whiteface would be able to hold them off and get the big win over the number one seen in district play at home.
Leading the Antelopes in scoring on the night was Chavez as he was a force in the paint getting 20 points on the night with 18 of them coming from under the basket.
Ethan Kauffman finished with 13 points, Cayden Timmons had another 12, Auscar Gandara had nine and Josh Whitehead had two in the team’s win over Whitharral.
For the Panthers the leading scorer on the night was Gomez as he had 27 points, 18 of his points coming from long range as he was on fire all night long.
Nate Sansom finished with 12 points on the night, Landon Lee had six, Kennedy Griffin had three and Brent Robinson finished with two in the loss.
The Whiteface Antelopes go up to 5-2 in district play with their only losses coming from Whitharral and Morton.
The Antelopes next game is against the Meadow Broncos this Friday as the visiting team at 6 p.m.
For the Whitharral Panthers they fall to 19-5 on the season while slipping to 8-1 in district play, sitting in the top place in district still.
The Panthers next game of district play is against the Amherst Bulldogs this Friday as the visiting team at 6:30 p.m.
