The Morton Indians took on the Lorenzo Hornets this past Friday for their UIL Boys Basketball area matchup in basketball playoffs where they won 54-48.
The first quarter of the game started off with the Indians taking a two point lead with the score sitting at 14-12 at the end of the first. The Morton Indians were on fire from beyond the arch as they had 12 of their 14 come from three.
For the second quarter of the game Morton was outscored 1210 in the second to tie the game at 24 points heading into the halftime break. The Indians kept shooting from long range as they hit two more shots from deep getting six of their 10 from there. Morton’s defense had trouble stopping the Hornets from driving inside the paint as Lorenzo had 16 points from inside the paint.
The score at the half was Morton tied with Lorenzo 24-24.
Leading the Morton Indians in scoring at the half were both Cade and Lane Lyon with six points apiece. All of their points coming from long range.
Going into the third quarter of the game Morton would take back the lead by one point as they had 13 points fall for them while they only allowed 12 points. Once more the Indians struggled to keep the Hornets from going inside the paint as Lorenzo had 10 of their 12 points from inside the arch.
For the final quarter of the game Morton was able to keep the game out of reach from the Hornets as they outscored them 17-12 to extend their lead and take the big playoff win. Morton was able to get 12 of their second half points from beyond the arch.
Alex Lopez led the team in scoring with 17 points, eight of his points from underneath the basket.
Lane Lyon had another 12 points, Cade Lyon had eight, Britton Boggs had five, A.J. Mendoza and E.J. Rivas each had four points apiece and Jaeden Alvarado finished the game with two points in the teams win.
Morton progressed to 25-8 overall while sitting in 25th in state.
The Morton Indians played their next game against the Jayton Jaybirds this past Tuesday in Frenship for their regional quarterfinal matchup.
