Lobos take down Sundown Roughnecks at home

The Levelland Lobos hosted the Sundown Roughnecks this past Saturday for UIL Baseball Action where the Lobos won 129.

The first run on the board was from Sundown after Hunter Clark hit a single to put the Roughnecks in the lead at the top of the first 1-0.

Levelland was able to take full control of the game in the bottom of the first after the scored five runs on four hits to take the 5-1 lead. The biggest momentum shift was when Rusty Johnson drove in two.

The Lobos were able to add onto their lead early in the bottom of the second innings after Noah Tienda stole home and Brayden Moore walked, each scoring one run to put Levelland up 7-1.

The Roughnecks had another run go for them in the top of the third when Rayden Flores walked bringing in Caleb Clausen to make the score 7-2 with Levelland leading.

The Roughnecks weren’t done as they had Flores hit a double to send a runner in and put the score at 7-3 in the top of the fifth with Levelland still holding their lead.

At the bottom of the fifth Levelland had Rance Massey ground out to the first baseman but still get Moore into home making the score 8-3 with the Lobos leading.

The Roughnecks responded in the top of the sixth inning after Jaxon Rodriguez hit a single off of a fly ball to right field and get Coen Nevarez to home making the score 8-4 Levelland leading.

In the bottom of the sixth is where the Lobos went on streak as Levelland had another four runs go for them after Charlie Romo, Jake Potter, Rusty Johnson and Anson Mcmahan all drove it in to give the team a boost towards the end of the game.

Sundown was able to scare the Lobos in the end as they scored five runs on five hits at the top of the seventh innings. A passed ball scored one run, Jayson Martinez doubled, scoring one run, Jaxon Rodriguez singled, scoring two runs and Clark singled, scoring one run.

Boston Winfeld earned the win for Levelland as he surrendered six hits and three runs over four and two-thirds innings, striking out five and walking six.

Caleb Clausen took the loss for the Roughnecks as he went two innings, surrendering seven runs on five hits, striking out one and walking four.

Tienda led the Lobos with three hits in four at bats from the leadoff position. Johnson and Massey each drove in two runs for the Lobos. Moore collected two hits for the Lobos with three at bats. Levelland had a strong eye for the ball as they had eight walks throughout the game. Tyler Pemberton, Potter and Mcmahan led the tam with two free passes each. Pemberton and Mcmahan each stole multiple bases for the Lobos. Levelland was able to steal seven bases in their contest. The Lobos didnt commit a single error and Johnson made the most plays with nine.

For the Roughnecks they were able to tally up 13 hits in the game. Rodriguez drove the middle of the lineup, leading the Roughnecks with three runs batted in as he went 3-for-3 on the day. Martinez led Sundown with four hits in five at bats from the leadoff position. Clark and Clausen each collected multiple hits for the Roughnecks. Rian Rose set the tone with three walks. Overall, the team had patience at the plate, piling up 11 walks for the game. Martinez stole two bases in their team’s contest against the Lobos.

The Levelland Lobos progressed to 9-9-1 on the season as they got ready for district play. The played against the Lakeview Chiefs this past Tuesday for their district opener.

For the Sundown Roughnecks they fall to 4-7 on the season with a district record of 1-3. Sundown will face off against the Tahoka Bulldogs this Friday at home at 11 a.m. for district play.
