Sundown Roughettes remain undefeated in district

The Sundown Roughettes took on the New Deal Lady Lions this past Friday at home in UIL District Softball play where the Roughettes won 11-4.

New Deal was on the board first after their batter hit a home run in the top of the first to send home two runners and make the score 3-0 early.

Sundown was able to answer in the bottom of the first inning after Brynly Gregory doubled on a line drive to left field to send in her teammate Emry Jourden for the score to make the score 3-1, New Deal still leading.

The Lady Lions got their final run in the top of the third inning after the batter hit a ground ball to center field for a single to send in a runner to make the score 4-1, New Deal leading.

The Roughettes took the lead in the bottom of the third thanks to doubles by Gregory, Araceli Ibarra and Paola Huerta to put the score to 5-4, Sundown taking the lead.

Sundown got three more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to extend their lead to 8-4 after two doubles to send in three runners.

For the Roughettes final runs of the game they got all three of them in the bottom of the fifth inning after a strikeout by Ariel Hernandez a double by Gregory and an error to put the game out of reach at 11-4 for the final.

Gregory collected four hits in four at bats throughout their contest.

Gregory also struck out 10 batters on the day while only allowing six hits and four runs over seven innings while walking none.

The Roughettes collected 15 hits in the game. Destiny Garza, Emry Jourden and Huerta each collected multiple hits for the Roughettes. Gregory stole two bases and the Roughettes turned one double play in the game.

Hernandez drove the middle of the lineup, leading New Deal with three runs batted in. The three-hole hitter went 1-for-3 on the day.

The Roughettes progressed to 21-3-1 on the season while remaining undefeated in district play with a perfect 8-0 record.

Sundown faced off against the Sudan Lady Hornets this past Monday at home and will play their second game of their series this upcoming Saturday as the visiting team at 11 a.m.
