The Levelland Lobos hosted the Sweetwater Mustangs this past Friday for UIL District Baseball play where Levelland won 7-2.
The Lobos, Coached by Head Baseball Coach Chris Portwood got off to a great start as they were on the board first.
The Lobos were able to get two runs in the bottom of the first inning after Brayden Moore singled and Jake Potter lined out, each scoring one run to make the score 2-0 early on.
Levelland was able to add onto their lead in the bottom of the second inning when Anson McMahan was struck by a pitch, driving in a run and Moore doubled, scoring one run.
A play extended the Lobos lead to 6-0 in the bottom of the third inning.
Sweetwater was able to get two runs in the top of the fifth inning after the batter hit a double off of a line drive to center field to send two runners in, making the score 6-2, Levelland leading.
The Lobos earned their final run of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning after a strikeout got Jacob Swain to home on a wild pitch to put the score at 7-2 and get Levelland their first win of district play.
Boston Winfield earned the win for Levelland as he gave up seven hits and two runs over seven innings, striking out five and walking three throughout the game.
Levelland piled up 11 hits in the game. Moore went 2-for-4 at the plate as the infielder led the team with one run batted in. Rance Massey collected two hits for the Lobos in four at bats. Tienda, Rusty Johnson and Charlie Romo each stole multiple bases for the Lobos. Levelland stole nine bases throughout the game. The Lobos turned in one double play. Levelland didn’t commit a single error in the game and Johnson made the most plays with five.
Tienda collected three hits in four at bats, he doubled in the first inning, singled in the second and singled in the fifth.
The Levelland Lobos progress to 10-12-1 on the season and go up to 1-3 in district play.
The Lobos played against Estacado this past Tuesday as the visiting team and will get ready to face off against the Lake View Chiefs this upcoming Friday as the home team at 7 p.m.
