Community celebration set July 7, downtown Levelland

A community celebration will be held on July 7, beginning at 6 p.m. in downtown Levelland.

Levelland City Manager James Fisher explained that the city and various community partners are trying to honor the volunteers that took part in helping Levelland community members cleanup the city following the devastating storms on May 29.

“I believe there was roughly 4,000 volunteer hours put into getting our community back on their feet,” said Fisher. “We still have a ways to go. You can go out there to the debris fields and see individuals still utilizing those areas.”

Fisher added that community members are still working on trying to get their lives back on track following the amount of destruction caused.

In putting together this celebration, Fisher hopes the community will celebrate their tenacity and their strength to bounce back from the damage that was brought on by the storms.

Food such as hotdogs and hamburgers will be available along with music.

“It won’t be something fancy or crazy, but it is just a way to pull everyone together and say thank you,” explained Fisher. “In addition to bringing community members together it is also a way to check on one another and see how our neighbors and friends are doing.”

Fisher feels that the City of Levelland needs to be proud of itself as the term “neighbors helping neighbors” was and continues to still be in affect following the storms.

“We had local businesses and individual community members lend their time and resources to cleaning up our city,” explained Fisher. “They did whatever they could to assist those who needed roofs tarped, windows boarded or offered water and food for those in need.”

While the event is set for the end of the holiday weekend, Fisher encouraged those to attend and forget about cooking for one night and enjoy themselves before another work week begins.
