The Levelland Lobos took on the Estacado Matadors this past Thursday night for the team’s district opener where they lost in a close game, 28-23.
For the start of the game, Levelland was able to force a three and out from the Matador offense and take full advantage by scoring on their first offensive possession from a 17-yard run from Ricky Rodriguez to make the score 7-0 after a made PAT from Eli Randol.
The Matadors answered back with a big kickoff return for a 55yards where right after they scored on a run from 25-yards out to make the score 7-6, after they didn’t score on their two-point conversion.
The Lobos answered back with another score of their own from a field goal from Randol from 18-yards out to make the score 106, in the second quarter.
The last score of the half came from Levelland as Ethan Salazar was able to find Gage Potter from five yards out to make the score 16-6, after the missed PAT from the Lobos going into the halftime break.
Out of the halftime Levelland started with the ball where their drive on offense stalled out as they had to punt the ball away to the Matador offense.
Estacado took advantage of the punt as they scored on another big run to make the score 16-14 after they got their twopoint conversion to go.
The Matadors defense stopped the Levelland offense once more as they scored again on offense with another run, this time from 20-yards out to make the score 22-16, taking their first lead of the game.
Levelland drove down the field in a long drive, but capped it off with a score from Ethan Salazar being pushed in from oneyard out to give Levelland the 2322 lead over Estacado.
The final score came from another big run from the Estacado offense to take the lead and win the game in a close 28-23 win.
The Levelland offense had 129 rushing yards with 217 yards through the air.
The defense struggled to stop the run as they gave up 278 rushing yards and 27 passing yards on the night.
Levelland falls to 4-3 on the season while starting off district play 0-1.
Their next matchup is against the Perryton Rangers next Friday at home at 7 p.m.
