Morton Indians falls to Crosbyton Chiefs

The Morton Indians hosted the Crosbyton Chiefs this past Thursday night for district play where the Indians fell, 42-24.

The first score of the game came from a 40-yard run from Jaeden Alvarado to give Morton the early 6-0 lead in the first quarter.

Crosbyton answered back with a score of their own from a 40-yard pass to make the score 86 after they made their two-point conversion.

The Chiefs got the ball back shortly afterwards where they punched the ball into the endzone from four-yards out to extend their lead to 16-6, still in the first quarter.

Right after they scored, the Indians scored a touchdown from a kickoff return from E.J. Rivas from 60-yards away to get Morton back into the game and make the score 16-12.

Crosbyton scored once more at the end of the first quarter with a 46-yard pass over the top of the Indian defense to make the score 22-12 at the end of the first quarter.

Morton responded with another big touchdown pass from 41-yard out from Brayden Villarreal to Rivas to make the score 22-18, Crosbyton still leading.

Towards the end of the first half, Crosbyton scored one more touchdown through the air, this time from 23-yards out to make the score 28-18, at the halftime break.

It was all defense from both sides in the third quarter with no scoring from either team.

In the final quarter of play, Crosbyton scored two more times to put the game out of reach with a big 76-yard pass and a 15-yard run to extend their lead to 42-18 towards the end of the game.

The final score of the game was from Morton with a pass from Villarreal to Christian Enriquez from 43-yards out off of a screen pass to make the final score of the game 42-24.

Villarreal led the Indians in passing on the night with 185 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. A.J. Mendoza had another 20 yards with one interception.

The Indians rushing attack was led by Villarreal who had 14 carries for 45 yards and one fumble. Alvarado had another 40 yards off one carry for one touchdown, Enriquez had eight carries for 35 yards and Mendoza had one carry for six yards.

E.J. Rivas led Morton in receiving yards with four catches for 55 yards and one touchdown. Alvarado had another three catches for 46 yards, Enriquez had two catches for 43 yards and one touchdown, Cade Lyon had one catch for 27 yards, Mendoza had two carries for 24 yards and Lane Lyon had one catch for 10 yards.

The Morton defense was led by Cade Lyon who led the team in total tackles with 14 on the night. Lane Lyon had another nine, Enriquez had nine, Alvarado, E.J. Rivas and Bishop Keeling all had seven tackles a piece, Mendoza, Villarreal and Jorge Regalado all had six tackles a piece, Hez Silvas had five, Xavien Rodriguez had four, Britton Boggs had two and Kirian Samaniego had one.

The Morton offense had four turnovers in their contest while the Crosbyton offense had none.

The Crosbyton Chiefs led in penalties as they had 18 flags for 103 yards while the Morton Indians had 10 flags for 95 yards.

The Morton Indians take their first loss in district as they go down to 3-5 on the season and 2-1 in district play. The Morton Indians will take on the Sudan Hornets this Friday on the road at 7 p.m. The Hornets are coming off of a loss to Hale Center, 50-29 in Hale Center.
