Sundown Roughnecks stun Ropes Eagles

The Sundown Roughnecks hosted the undefeated Ropes Eagles this past Friday night in district play where the Roughnecks stunned the Eagles, 28-21.

The Roughnecks started off with the first possession of the game where Marcus Solis was able to make a touchdown run on the first play of the game from 73yards out to make the score 7-0 after Sundown’s made PAT.

The rest of the first quarter was a stalemate with neither team being able to move the ball on one another.

To open up the second quarter, Sundown was able to break off another big run with Solis, this time from 36-yards out to make the score 14-0 towards the end of the half.

Ropes didn’t go away though as Kade Franklin was able to hit a 48-yard pass to Reese Williams for a Eagle touchdown to make the score manageable going into the halftime, 14-7.

In the third quarter of the game there was only one score and that was from Sundown from seven-yards out on a Braiden Lara run to extend the Roughnecks score 21-7.

Sundown poured it on in the final quarter of play with another short four-yard run, this time from Coen Nevarez to make the score 28-7.

Although the Eagles were in a deficit they never gave up as Zayden Pittman hit a 16-yard pass to Kolter Dockery to make the score 28-14 in the fourth.

The final score of the game was from Ropes once more as Pittman had another deep pass, this time to Reese Williams from 41-yards out to make the final score of the game 28-24, Roughnecks win.

Sundown’s leading passer on the night was Adan Escamilla with two completed passes for 29 yards.

Leading the Roughnecks in rushing was Solis with 14 carries for 131 yards and two touchdowns. Lara had seven carries for 49 yards and one touchdown, Brayson Frey had five carries for 12 yards, Escamilla had five carries for 19 yards, Nevarez had four carries for 24 yards and one touchdown, Toby Lopez had five carries for nine yards, Trevor Bridges had two carries for six yards and Rayden Flores had two carries for 13 yards.

Only two Roughnecks had a catch on the night with Lara catching one pass for 11 yards and Solis with one catch for 18 yards.

On the defensive side of the ball the Roughnecks were able to get three interceptions on the night with Escamilla, Lopez and Lara having one a piece.

For the Ropes Eagles offense they were able to get 340 total yards of offense.

Kade Franklin led the Eagles in passing with 158 yards with one touchdown and three interceptions. Pittman had another 81 passing yards with two touchdowns.

Leading Ropes in rushing was Pittman with seven carries for 83 yards. Mason Marmolejo had another eight carries for 10 yards, Ryland Kieth had eight carries for eight yards and Kade Franklin had two carries for two yards.

The Eagles leading receiver on the night was Reese Williams as he had five catches for 141 yards and two touchdowns. Dockery had another five catches for 48 yards and one touchdown, Kaden Riker had two catches for 34 yards and Marmolejo had two catches for nine yards.

On defense for the Ropes Eagles it would be Kaden Riker that led the team in total tackles with 17 in their contest along with one sack. Mike Sanchez had another 16 tackles, Kanon Buckner had 13, four Eagles had 11 tackles in Branson Simental, Brady Bryan, Pittman and Victor Saenz, Trak Crow had 10 tackles, Reid McCaleb had nine, Reese Williams and Kolter Dockery both had eight tackles, Brayden Hogg and Elijah Flores both had six, Tyler Harbuck had five and both Maddux Sierra and Kieth had one tackle. Mike Williams had a fumble recovery on the night.

Both offense’s were rolling as the Roughnecks had 11 first downs while the Eagles had 16 on the night. In the turnover battle Sundown won with only having one fumble while the Eagles had three, with all of them being interceptions.

The Sundown Roughnecks progress to 3-5 on the season while remaining undefeated in district play. The Roughnecks will get ready to take on the Tahoka Bulldogs this Friday on the road at 7 p.m.

For the Ropes Eagles they take their first loss of the year and go down to 7-1 on the season while going down to 2-1 in district play. The Eagles will take on the Seagraves Eagles this Friday on the road at 7 p.m.
