Morton Indians fall to Sudan Hornets

The Morton Indians took on the Sudan Hornets this past Friday on the road where the Indians fell 36-24, after a tough second quarter.

To start the game off, Morton was the first team on the board after a 31-yard rush from Christian Enriquez to make the score 8-0 after the made two-point conversion. That was the only score in the first quarter from either team, in the second quarter it was all Sudan.

Sudan started off with a 60yard pass for a touchdown, then they had another six-yard touchdown run to take the lead 14-8, going into the halftime break.

Coming out of the break, Sudan scored another rushing touchdown, this time from 11yard out to make the score 22-8.

The Indians never gave up though as Enriquez on defense was able to return a fumble for a touchdown to make the score 2216. The Hornets answered with another huge passing touchdown though as they hit a 53-yard touchdown pass to extend their lead 30-16 in the fourth.

Morton answered with a touchdown pass of their own from 59-yards out, Brayden Villarreal to E.J. Rivas connection to make the score 30-24.

Although it was a good effort from Morton, Sudan ended the game with another big rushing touchdown from 47-yards out to make the final score of the game 36-24.

Morton through the air was on fire as Villarreal passed for 203 yards with one touchdown and one interception.

Leading the Indians in rushing was Enriquez who had 10 carries for 55 yards and one touchdown. Villarreal had another 14 carries for 12 yards and A.J. Mendoza had two carries for 11 yards.

Rivas led the team in receiving yards with eight catches for 148 yards and one touchdown on the night. Enriquez had three catches for 25 yards, Cade Lyon had one catch for 16 yards and Jaeden Alvarado had two catches for 12 yards.

On the defensive side of the ball Hez Silvas led the team in solo tackles with eight in their contest. Villarreal and Cade Lyon both had four tackles, Alvarado had three, Enriquez, Mendoza, Lane Lyon and Britton Boggs all had two and both Rivas and Jorge Regalado had one tackle on the night. The Indians were able to force two turnovers on the night with an Enriquez fumble recovery and Alvarado interception.

The Morton Indians fall to 36 on the season while going down to 2-2 in district play. The Indians last district game of the season is against the Hale Center Owls this Friday at home at 7 p.m.
