The Sundown Roughnecks go 1-1 in district play over the week with a win against the Smyer Bobcats and a loss against the Plains Cowboys.
Sundown 53, Smyer 18
For the Sundown Roughnecks district opener against the Bobcats they won 5318 at home.
For the first quarter of play the Roughnecks took an eightpoint lead making the score 15-7, going into the second quarter of play.
In the second quarter of the game Sundown added onto their lead by scoring another 15 points while the Bobcats scored three points making the score 30-10, going into the halftime break.
Leading the Roughnecks in scoring at the halftime break was Kye Powell with 12 points.
For the Bobcats the leading scorer at the half was Austin Martinez with six points from a pair of long range shots.
Going into the third quarter of action it was more of the same story as Sundown outscored Smyer 15-2 to extend their lead to 33 points going into the final quarter of play.
The final quarter had Sundown score eight points while holding Smyer to only six taking the district opener win.
Leading the Roughnecks in scoring was Powell with 19 points in the game. Nathan McAdams had another 11 points, Briar Miller had six, Coen Nevarez had five, Josh Hogan had four, both Braiden Lara and Isaac Lopez had three points and Nathan Flores finished with two points.
For the Bobcats the leading scorer on the night was Austin Martinez with nine points, all from behind the arch. Micah Zapata finished with five points and both Skyler Pond and Rylan Smith finished with two points a piece.
Sundown won the rebounding category and steals with 41 rebounds to 29 and 16 steals to 11. Smyer did lead in the blocking category though as they had four while the Roughnecks had five.
The Sundown Roughnecks shot the ball from the field for 39% while going 55% from the free-throw line. The Smyer Bobcats shot the ball for 14% from the field while going 25% from the charity stripe.
Plains 70, Sundown 43
For the Roughnecks second game of district play they had to go against the Plains Cowboys where they lost, 70-43 on the road.
The first quarter had Plains taking a lead over the Roughnecks 19-6 taking a big 13 point lead going into the second quarter.
The second quarter was tighter with Sundown barely being outscored 16-13, as the team’s went into the break with the score sitting at 35-19.
For the third quarter of play Plains kept their offense on fire as they outscored the Roughnecks 22-9 extending their lead going into the final quarter of play.
With the game mostly decided the Cowboys put the game away taking the district win over Sundown, 70-43 in Plains.
Leading the Roughnecks in scoring was McAdams with 12 points. Powell had nine, Miller had seven, Nevarez had six, Adan Escamilla had five and both Flores and Hogan had two points in the contest.
The Roughnecks shot the ball for 37% from the field while going 23% from long range. Sundown also shot for 57% from the charity stripe.
The Roughnecks were outrebounded 28-22 while they had more steals than the Plains Cowboys. Sundown had seven steals while Plains only had six.
Sundown moves to 4-5 on the season as they go to 1-1 in district play. The Roughnecks will play against the Levelland Lobos January 3, on the road at 7:30 p.m.
