Bobcats fall to Roughnecks at home

The Smyer Bobcats hosted the Sundown Roughnecks this past Tuesday night for district play where the Roughnecks outlasted the Bobcats 50-46.

At the start of the game it was a high scoring offensive showcase with Smyer taking the five-point lead making the score 20-15, after they were able to drive into the paint well.

The second quarter was the Roughnecks taking control of the game after they held Smyer to 10 points while they put up another 22 of their own to take the lead going into the halftime break with the score sitting at 37-30.

Leading the Bobcats in scoring at the half was Rylan Smith with 11 points, nine of them in the first quarter.

For the Roughnecks the leading scorer was Kye Powell with 10 points, eight of them in the second quarter.

Coming out of the break, it was a defensive battle for both sides of the ball as both team’s were held to just four points a piece making the score 41-34, going into the fourth quarter.

Although it was a close game throughout, Sundown was able to pull the game out from Smyer and take the district win.

Smyer had two leading scorers on the team in Smith and Micah Zapata both with 15 points a piece. Micah Stevens had nine points, Mason Medart had five and Austin Martinez finished with two points.

For the Roughnecks the leading scorer was Powell with 16 points on the night. Isaiah Igo had another nine points, Isaac Lopez had eight points, Briar Miller had seven points, Nathan McAdams had six and both Joshua Hogan and Nathan Flores finished with two points a piece.

Sundown outrebounded the Bobcats 38-31 on the night as well as outdoing them in assists 13-12 and steals 15-10.

Smyer shot the ball for 39% from the field while going for 9% from beyond the arch. The Bobcats shot well from the free throw line though as they went for 67%.

For the Roughnecks they were able to shoot for 31% from the field while going 27% from long range. Sundown also shot the ball well from the charity stripe going 60% from the line.

The Smyer Bobcats fall to 513 on the season while going down to 0-7 in district play. The Bobcats next game in district play is against the Whiteface Antelopes this Tuesday at home at 7:30 p.m. after going against the Morton Indians this past Friday on the road.

For the Sundown Roughnecks they progress to 512 on the season as they go up to 2-5 in district play sitting in fifth place behind Seagraves. The Roughnecks next game of district play is against the Morton Indians next Friday night on the road at 7:30 p.m. after going against the Plains Cowboys this past Friday at home.
