Morton Indians take down Smyer Bobcats at home

The Morton Indians hosted the Smyer Bobcats this past Friday night for district play where the Indians routed the Bobcats 66-43.

The start of the game had Morton taking a big lead over the Bobcats as they outscored them 19-9, taking a 10-point lead going into the second quarter.

For the second quarter it was more of the same story as the Indians offense was tough to stop for Smyer and Morton outscored them once more, this time 15-13, extending their lead by two and going into the halftime break with the score sitting at 3424.

Leading the Indians in scoring at the half was Brayden Villarreal with 11 points, eight of them from inside the paint.

For the Bobcats the leading scorer at the half was Micah Zapata with 11 points as well, six of them from the first quarter.

Out of the break it was a defensive battle as both teams were having a tough time scoring. Although it was tough for both sides Morton was able to still outscore Smyer 10-7, making the score 44-31 going into the fourth quarter.

For the final quarter of the game, it was an offensive outburst as Morton was able to put up 17 points, while Smyer had 14 of their own. It was a hard battle for both teams but Morton was able to pull away and get the district win and complete the series sweep of the Bobcats.

Villarreal led the Indians in scoring on the night with 17 points. E.J. Rivas had another 12 points, Both Jaeden Alvarado and Tra Holland had 10 points a piece, Cade Lyon had nine, A.J. Mendoza and Christian Enriquez both had three points and Britton Boggs finished with two points.

For the Smyer Bobcats the leading scorer on the night was Zapata with 16 points. Austin Martinez had another 15 points, Rylan Smith had 10 and Mason Medart finished with three points.

The Indians shot the ball for 38% from the field while going 34% from three-pointer range and 100% from the free-throw line.

For the Bobcats they shot the ball for 31% from the field while going 27% from the longrange ball and 41% from the charity stripe.

Morton won in every category as they outrebounded the Bobcats 42-to-30, had more assists 16-to-11 and had more steals throughout the game getting 16 while they gave up the ball another eight times.

The Morton Indians progress to 5-3 in district play. The Indians next game of district play is against the Sundown Roughnecks this Friday at home at 7:30 p.m. after going up against the Plains Cowboys this past Tuesday on the road.

For the Smyer Bobcats they fall to 0-7 in district play still looking for their first win. The Bobcats next game is against the Seagraves Eagles this Friday on the road at 7:30 p.m after they played against the Whiteface Antelopes this past Tuesday at home.
