Roughettes fall short in close comeback victory

The Sundown Roughettes hosted the Plains Cowgirls this past Friday night for district play where the Roughettes fell, 40-37 in a close game.

The start of the game started out rough for the Roughettes as they started off being outscored 22-9, falling to a 13-point deficit early.

The second quarter was better for Sundown as they were able to tie the quarter with Plains with four points a piece being scored by both teams, making the score 26-13, going into the halftime break with Plains leading.

Leading the Roughettes in scoring at the half was Hannah Holdman with seven points, all in the first quarter.

Out of the break for Sundown they were playing their game though as they were able to put up 17 points in the third quarter while they held the Cowgirls to only eight points, cutting into the Plains lead and making the score 34-30 going into the final quarter.

Although the Roughnecks were able to give Plains a scare, it wasn’t enough as they fell just short of the comeback and the Cowgirls took the district win away.

Holdman led the Roughettes in scoring on the night with 15 points. Camry Jourden had another 10 points, Araceli Ibarra had seven, Kyndal Taggart had four points and Kaytlin Clausen finished with one point.

The Roughettes fall to 8-16 on the season and go down to 4-6 in district play sitting just outside of playoffs in the fifth spot in district. Sundown’s next game is against the Whiteface Lady Lopes next Tuesday night at 6:15 p.m. after going up against the Morton Maidens on the road this past Tuesday.
