Morton moves onto Regional Finals

The Morton Indians took on the Nazareth Swifts this past Friday and Saturday for their UIL Regional Semi-Finals Matchup where the Indians won in three games to move onto the Regional Finals this upcoming Friday.

Morton 12, Nazareth 0

For the team’s first game of the series, Morton was able to run-rule the Swifts after five innings.

Morton was the first team on the board after they scored three runs in the bottom of the third inning to make the score 3-0 early.

The Indians added onto their lead in the bottom of the third inning after they flipped the game on its head when they scored six runs to make the score 9-0.

They finished off the swifts in the bottom of the fourth when they added another three runs making the final score 12-0 taking the first game easily.

Lane Lyon earned the win for the Indians as he gave up one hit and zero runs over five innings, striking out three and walking two in the game.

E.J. Rivas led the team with three hits in four at bats. Rivas also led the team in three runs while Cade Lyon had one, Luis Yanez had one, Brayden Villarreal had two, Jaden Alvarado had two, A.J. Mendoza had one and Christian Enriquez had two.

Nazareth 12, Morton 4

For the team’s second game of the series they fell after Nazareth had a great first inning to lead them to a Swift’s victory.

Morton was the first team on the board in the top of the first inning making the score 1-0 early.

Nazareth responded with four runs in the bottom of the first taking the 4-1 lead.

The Swifts added onto their lead in the bottom of the second inning after they had three more runs making the score 7-1.

Morton would be able to give them a scare after they scored three runs in the top of the fourth inning making the score 74.

Nazareth held onto the score the rest of the game after they had two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and another three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to force a game three and take the game two win 12-4.

Cade Lyon for the Indians gave up two hits and three runs (two earned) over three and twothird innings, striking out none and walking seven in the game.

Lane Lyon appeared in relief for Morton as he gave up six hits and four runs (three earned) over one inning, striking out none and walking one.

A.J. Mendoza appeared in relief for the Indians as well as he gave up one hits and one run over one inning, striking out none and walking two.

Cade Lyon had a good game at the bat as he led the team with two hits in two at bats throughout the game. Cade Lyon and Britton Boggs led the team in RBI’s with two each.

Morton 15, Nazareth 12

For the final game of the three game series, Morton was able to take the big 15-12 win over the Swifts to move onto the Regional Finals.

Once more to start the game Morton was the first team on the board in the top of the first inning earning one run to make the score 1-0 early.

Nazareth answered back with three runs of their own in the bottom of the first inning, taking the lead and making the score 3-1.

The Indians retook the lead in the top of the second inning after they had three of their own runs go for them to retake the lead at 4-3.

The Swifts once more took the lead after they had two runs in the bottom of the second inning to make the score 5-4, Nazareth leading.

The Indians took the lead once more in the top of the third inning after they had two more runs go for them to make the new score 6-5.

In the bottom of the third inning, Nazareth retook the lead again, getting two more runs making the score 7-6, making the Indians work for the lead.

Morton finally tied the game up at seven apiece in the top of the fourth inning after they only had one run go for them.

Eventually, the Indians took the lead in the top of the fifth inning after their defense held the Swifts scoreless in the bottom of the fourth inning, making the score 8-7.

The Indians had another three runs in the top of the sixth inning, giving them some room and making the score 11-7.

Nazareth responded after two scoreless innings, getting five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, taking the one run lead close to the end of the game, making the score 12-11.

Morton responded with four more runs of their own at the top of the seventh inning, retaking the lead and holding onto it in the very end after their defense came up big by holding the Swifts scoreless in the final inning and winning the big game 15-12.

Cade Lyon earned the win for the Indians as he gave up five hits and seven runs (five earned) over two and one-third innings, striking out none and walking none.

A.J. Mendoza appeared in relief for the Indians as he gave up seven hits and five runs (two earned) over two and one-third innings, striking out none and walking two in the game.

Rivas, Cade Lyon and Villarreal all led the team in hits with three each in their contest. Lane Lyon led the team in RBI’s with three on the day.

The Morton Indians progress to 14-6 on the season as they get ready to go up against the Ira Bulldogs this Friday in Lubbock Christian High School at 6 p.m. for a one game series where the winner moves on to the State Championship.
