Whitharral wins District Championship over Amherst

The Whitharral Panthers took on the Amherst Bulldogs last Friday where they grabbed the win 46-32, at home.

The game started off with a 30-yard pass from Jack Griffin to Dawson Rodgers to make the score 8-0 after a good kick from Jack Griffin.

The panther defense was able to get a turnover and get the offense back on the field where they again scored from a 15-yard pass from Landon Lee to Brent Robinson where they extended their lead to 16-0 after another good kick.

The Amherst Bulldogs were finally able to get on the board from a run and able to make their kick making it a one score game again 16-8.

The second quarter was more Whitharral as they were able to score from four yards out with a pass from Griffin to Rayden Potter and another good kick to extend their lead once again making the score 24-8.

The Bulldogs would not go away so easily as they again responded with a touchdown of their own on the ground as they got their kick blocked making the score 24-14 going into the half.

Coming out of the break Amherst was on the board in a hurry scoring off a run and bringing the game to a one score again missing their kick making the score 24-20 out of the break.

Whitharral wouldnt back down though as they would score off of another pass from Brent Robinson to Landon Lee from 14 yards out as they made their next kick making the score 32-20.

The defense was able to get another stop in the third and the offense was able to score once again in the third with a pass from Jack Griffin from three yards out to Potter once more extending the teams lead 38-20 at the end of the third.

Finally in the fourth quarter Amherst was able to gain some momentum off of a 17-yard touchdown pass as they were not able to make another kick once more.

The panthers werent done as they scored their final touchdown of the night in the fourth with a rushing touchdown from 13 yards out from Potter. Griffin with another made kick made him perfect on the night as Whitharral could not be stopped against the Bulldogs.

Amherst was able to get on the board for the final drive of the night making the score 46-32 after they missed their kick once again.

ThePanthers offense had 166 yards on the ground and 183 yards through the air. The Whitharral offense made no mistakes on the night, as they did not turnover the ball once compared to the Bulldogs two turnovers.

The Panthers defense did well as they had two interceptions along with only giving up 68 yards through the air and 297 rushing yards.

The leading rusher for the Panthers was Brent Robinson who had 81 rushing yards on seven attempts.

Teammates Dawson Rodgers and Jack Griffin both had 31 rushing yards each and Rayden Potter had 13 yards on the night off of one rush while Nomar Gomez had 10 yards off of two carries.

The leading receiver on the team was Rodgers as he had 57 receiving yards on three catches and a touchdown.

Lee had 34 yards off of three catches as well, along with two touchdowns on the night, Potter had 33 yards with four catches with two touchdowns, Gomez had another 30 yards with three catches, Griffin had 27 yards with three catches and Nathan Samson had two yards off of one catch in their win.

The passing leader for the panthers was Brent Robinson who went 11-for-12 with 137 yards and two touchdowns with no turnovers.

Jack Griffin threw for 44 yards off 5-for-11 and three touchdowns on the night as well as no turnovers.

The Panthers finished off their season with a record of 9-1. The Panthers will go up against the Groom Tigers who have an overall record of 4-5 on the year and are going into the game against the Panthers off of a high scoring game against Lefors who they narrowly beat 82-78.

The game will take place at Silverton on Thursday at 7 p.m.
