Friday night in Sundown, Texas, the parents of Allie McCormick fought back tears of pride as McCormick sunk a free throw in the first quarter to make her sixth point of the game. While there was a buzz in the stands, McCormick was unaware that this free throw would be the 1,000th point of her Varsity Career.
In just two and a half seasons, the junior guard had managed to accomplish a milestone that a lot of great basketball players may never see. junior post Hannah Holdman said, “Allie is an outstanding basketball player and an even better person. She works harder than anyone that I know on and off the court. I am blessed not only to have her as a teammate but also as a best friend.” Other friends, family, and teammates of McCormick’s echoed this sentiment. As they excitedly cheered for this achievement.
McCormick scored five more points in the first quarter, freshman Kyndal Taggart sank two free throws, and sophomore guard Camry Jourden added two more on the night.
In the second quarter, senior Aubrey Rogers put up two more points and gave the Roughettes a 17-7 lead over the Tahoka Lady Bulldogs at the half.
In the third quarter, Taggart remained consistent at the free throw line with two more hits while McCormick scored a tough layup for two.
In the fourth quarter, senior Jamie Sims added two before the Lady Bulldogs before the Lady Bulldogs went on a run, resulting in 12 points and a three-point lead. McCormick answered with a three and a steal, resulting in a layup before the Lady Bulldogs returned with another two, tying up the ball game. Taggart’s free throw consistency, the tough defense played by Jourden, and solid rebounds by Holdman held the game to a tie to end the fourth quarter.
In overtime, the team put together a bucket as well as two more consistent free throws by Taggart, two final points, and a free throw by McCormick to end the game with a 37-35 win over the Lady Bulldogs.
After the game, McCormick praised her team by saying, “It was a battle of who wanted it more, and we proved we did. We did not give up when the game wasn’t going our way, and we proved what we knew we were 100 percent capable of.” Head Girls Basketball Coach Kim Watson credited the team by saying, “It was a great game, and it was because of these girls. They deserve all the credit.” She’s got a great group of girls on her team.
The teams next game will be against the Ropes Lady Eagles this upcoming Friday as the away team at 6:00 p.m.
