Bobcats fall to Indians, 48-20

The Smyer Bobcats showed signs of life offensively but were unable to overcome a slow start, falling 4820 to the Morton Indians.

Morton jumped out to a 28-6 lead in the first quarter and added 13 points in the second quarter to take a 41-6 advantage into halftime. Smyer responded with six points in the third quarter and eight in the fourth quarter, but the early deficit proved too much to overcome.

“They keep continuing to get better,” Smyer’s Head Coach Scott Funke said about his team showing offensive life in the second half.

The Bobcats finished with 97 rushing yards and 131 passing yards. Junior quarterback Cash Pastusek threw for 82 yards on 7 of 12 passes.

Defensively, Smyer recorded 38 total tackles, including five tackles for loss and six quarterback pressures. Senior linebacker James Rampy led the Bobcats with seven tackles, while sophomore defensive back Miguel Ramirez added six of his own.

Despite being winless this season, Funke has been able to maintain a positive culture throughout the locker room by focusing on things beyond the scoreboard.

“We don’t focus on the scoreboard,” Funke said. “We focus on those daily traits that make good human beings.”

Smyer (0-8, 0-3) will continue their district play versus Seagraves (5-3,1-2) at 7 p.m. on Oct. 30 at Seagraves.
