Eagles take down Roughnecks at home

The Sundown Roughnecks went on the road to take on the Ropes Eagles in district play where they lost 57-48.

The start of the game was a showcase of all offense as Ropes was able to outscore Sundown 18-to-10 in just the first quarter of play as both offenses went to work.

The second quarter of play saw more defense as Sundown was able to get the edge on Ropes, outscoring them 8-to-5 and cutting the Eagle lead to only five points heading into the halftime break.

The score at the half was Ropes leading Sundown 23-18.

Leading the Roughnecks in scoring at the half was Jay Martinez as he was able to get seven points at the half, six of them coming from inside the paint.

As for the Eagles, Darren Kizer would lead the team in scoring as he was able to get eight points to go, six of those points coming from inside the paint as well.

Going into the third quarter Ropes would outscore Sundown once more as they would be able to get another 18 points in the third while holding the Roughnecks to only 13 points going into the final quarter of play.

The score at the end of the third quarter was Ropes holding the lead 41-31.

For the final quarter of play Sundown would have their best scoring output of the night with 17 points scored but it would not be enough as Ropes would hold the lead by getting an additional 16 points, taking the big district win.

For the Eagles they had two players reach double digits in scoring in Landon Nale who had 16 points and Kizer who would finish the game with 14 on the night.

Four Ropes players would finish with five points on the night in Kade Franklin, Brady Bryan, E.J. Mendez and Cutter Stumbo. Two more Eagles would have another three points for the team in both Bode Franklin and Brennan Bearden and finally Reese Williams would finish the game with one point throughout the game.

For the Sundown Roughnecks, two players would finish in double digit points as well in Watson Evans who would have 12 points on the night and Martinez who would finish the game with 11 points.

Two Roughnecks would finish with six points a piece in Adan Escamilla and Kye Powell. Briar Miller had five, Branson Sanders had four and Jaxson Rodriguez would finish with three points on the night.

Sundown slips to 6-13 on the year while going 2-4 in district play.

The teams next game of the season will be against the New Home Leopards as the visiting team at 7:30 p.m.

For Ropes the team will progress to 19-6 on the season while going to 4-2 in district play, losing only to New Home and Plains.

The Eagles next game of the season will be against the Tahoka Bulldogs as the home team at 7:30 p.m.
