The Morton Maidens traveled on the road for a district softball matchup against the Seagraves Lady Eagles this past Saturday, resulting in the Maidens earning an 18-2 run rule victory across five innings.
Morton added two runs in the first inning and nine runs in the second inning; Seagraves would respond with a run in the third inning, and the Maidens would close out the game strong by outscoring them 7-1 in the final two frames.
Morton bested Seagraves 11-0 in hits and 6-1 in walks drawn, while Seagraves bested them 0-3 in errors committed.
While the Maidens offense was firing on all cylinders in the game, the story of the game was Audrie Garcia tossing a no-hitter from the mound.
Garcia tossed all five innings, holding Seagraves to zero earned runs on zero hits and a walk while striking out seven batters.
“When you get that kind of performance, it gives us a great chance,” Morton Head Softball Coach Martin Adams said. “Unfortunately, due to a few errors and walked batters she missed out on the shutout and perfect game.”
Standouts at the plate for the Maidens included J’lynn Marquez going ¾ with three stolen bases, two runs-batted- in, two runs scored, two doubles and a triple, Aubree Ramon going 2/5 with three stolen bases, two runs scored, an RBI and a double, Ada Torres going 1/1 with four stolen bases, two runs scored, two walks and an RBI, Maya Huckabee going 1/3 with six stolen bases, two runs scored, an RBI and a walk, and Natalie Ramirez going 1/1 with three runs scored.
The win improves the Maidens to 6-12 overall and 3-4 in district play, which ties them for third in the 2A District 4 softball standings.
They return to action early in the week against Sundown before hosting Tahoka on Friday at 5 p.m. for Senior Night.
