The Sundown Roughettes hosted the Morton Maidens for a district softball matchup this past Monday, resulting in the Roughettes earning a dominant 20-0 win over three innings.
The biggest story in the Roughettes win was pitcher Breigh Gregory tossing a perfect game, allowing no hits, walks or runs while striking out eight batters in the win. Her performance also marked back-to-back perfect games for Sundown pitchers after her teammate Destiny Garza had one in their previous game.
And although she didn’t need it, Breigh had plenty of run support as Sundown collected 10 hits and four walks in the 20-run outburst.
Standouts with the Roughettes at the plate included shortstop Emry Jourden going 3/3 with six runs-batted-in, three runs scored, a home run, a double and a stolen base, third baseman Destiny Garza going 2/3 with three RBI’s, three runs scored, two doubles and a stolen base, left fielder Jaelyn Dominguez with two RBI’s, two runs scored and a walk, Kaytlin Clausen with two RBI’s, two walks and a run scored, second baseman Nayleen Morin going 1/3 with an RBI, a double, a stolen base and a run scored, and catcher Brynly Gregory going 1/3 with an RBI and two stolen bases.
The win improved the Roughettes to 13-2 overall and 3-0 in district play; meanwhile the loss dropped the Maidens to 4-10 overall and 1-2 in district play.
It was a tough result for the Maidens, but their 10 errors committed made it seem worse than it was, as starting pitcher Audrie Garcia only surrendered three earned runs.
“Obviously, Sundown is a high caliber team,” Morton Head Softball Coach Martin Adams said. “I feel like Audrie gave us a chance to compete, but we could not make the routine plays behind her. Sundown hit her hard a few times, and they definitely took advantage of our mistakes. My message to the team was to learn how to make the plays we are supposed to make. Once we figure out how to do that, we will be okay. It was great for us to see good velocity from Gregory; she is a special talent. Overall, it was a growing experience for our girls.”
After gaining valuable experience, the Maidens will be back in action on Tuesday at 5 p.m. on the road against Tahoka.
Meanwhile, the Roughettes would play again this past Tuesday and lose a close one to Midland Christian, 5-4, dropping their record to 13-3 overall. They’ll return to play on Tuesday at 5 p.m. on the road at New Home.
