Lady Cats fall to Floydada in district battle

The Smyer Lady Cats took on the Floydada Lady Whirlwinds this past Tuesday where they lost in district basketball play 70-37.

The first quarter of the game started off with Smyer taking a small lead as they got off to a great start and outscoring the Lady Whirlwinds 18-16.

After the Lady Cats first quarter they would let go of the lead and never be able to get it back.

For the second quarter of play the Lady Cats got outscored 19-5 losing their lead and trailing at the half.

The score at the end of the halftime break was Smyer trailing 35-23.

Leading the Lady Cats in scoring at the half was both Jada Hernandez and Maegan Smith who both had six points at the half.

Going into the third quarter of play the Lady Cats would struggle to stop Floydada as they would let up 24 points in the third while only getting six of their own points to fall for them.

For the final quarter of play Smyer would keep up but would slip up as they would be outscored 11-8 and dropping a big district game.

Hernandez led the team in scoring for the night with 13 points.

Smith finished the game with eight points, Kira Posadas had six, Vannah Jourden had four and three Lady Cats finished with two points in Dyamond Baker, Rylee Riedel and Kaia Brandon.

The Lady Cats fall to 12-14 on the season while slipping to 39 in district play.

The Smyer Lady Cats will play their last district game of the season this Tuesday against the Ralls Lady Jackrabbits this Tuesday as the away team at 6 p.m.
