The Smyer Lady Cats couldn’t stop an Olton rally in the second quarter and spent the rest of the game trying to catch the visiting Olton Lady Mustangs in a 53-47 UIL high school basketball home loss last Tuesday.
Whiteface came out firing, taking a 6-1 lead four minutes into the game and a 14-4 lead at the first inning buzzer.
Kira Posadas and Rylee Riedel had a three-point shot each in the first quarter and Maegan Smith had two.
The second quarter was much different, however, as the Lady Mustangs shut the Smyer girls down, outscoring them 16-0 to take a 20-14 lead into the halftime locker room.
The Lady Cats rallied in the third and even took a 23-22 lead on a putback by Vannah Jourdan with 5:26 left in the quarter.
Olton was able to fend them off, however with a 6-0 run over the next two minutes and led by four at the start of the fourth.
Smyer struggled in the fourth. Olton started off with a 12-0 run. The closest Smyer could get was eight points down and when Riedel fouled out with nearly three minutes left, the Lady Cats’ fate was sealed.
Smith led the Lady Cats with 13 points. Riedel and Posadas each had seven. Vannah Jourdan had six. Dyamon Baker had five, as did Kaia Brandon.
The Lady Cats will be in the Caprock Classic tournament in Lubbock from December 28-30.
