Lady Lopes tops Maidens, in Morton

The Whiteface Lady Lopes opened UIL District 7-1A high school girls’ basketball play with two wins last week, a 60-30 road win over the Lady Broncos from Meadow last Tuesday and a 7925 win over the visiting Morton Maidens on Friday.

Whiteface, ranked 11 th by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches at this writing, was never in trouble as they led 17-8 at the end of the first quarter and 35-10 at halftime.

The Lady Lopes outscored Meadow 10-0 in the third.

The Lady Lopes out rebounded Meadow 33-28, but the telling statistics involved teamwork and ball handling.

Whiteface had 16 assists compared to five for Meadow and the Lady Lopes stole the ball 19 times against eight for the Lady Broncos.

Meadow blocked six Whiteface shots, while the Lady Lopes blocked only one.

The two teams were close in field goal percentage with the Lady Lopes at 34 percent and Meadow at 31, but the number of shots tells a different story. Whiteface hit 23 baskets, including three point attempts, against only 11 baskets for the Lady Broncos.

The Lady Lopes ability to shoot was also telling in three point shots where their 16 percent shooting resulted in four treys, while 45 percent for Meadow resulted in only five.

Whiteface went 10-for-11 at the free throw line against 3-for-6 for Meadow.

Hannah Blankenship led all scorers with 19 points. Jaedyn Rector had 16. Tymmyah Olenga had 10. Emily Blankenship had seven. Kylie Deavours had four. Emma Ayers had three and Lainey Sanders had one.

Whiteface 79, Morton 25

The Lady Lopes outscored the Maidens 25-0 in the first quarter and cruised to the win. Whiteface led 42-15 at halftime and 58-20 at the end of the third quarter Rector led Whiteface with 19 points. Olenga had 18. Ayers had 13. Sanders, Emily Blankenship and Hannah Blankenship had nine each. Deavours had two.

For Morton, Alexiah Garza had six points. Aerieana Rodriguez and Clarissa Holland had five each. Khloe Bordayo had four. Natalie Ramirez had three. Jayden Keeling had two. Blaize Garza and Alison Yanez had one each.

The Lady Lopes will host Stanton on Friday at 2 p.m.
