The Whitharral Lady Panther girls’ high school basketball team finished second in the J.P. Stone Invitational Basketball Tournament in Dora, N.M. last weekend.
The Lady Panthers amassed a 2-1 record, falling to the Roy/ Mosquero Lady Longhorns 50-42 in the championship round on Saturday.
Whitharral 55, Logan 32
The Lady Panthers cruised to a 55-32 win over Logan, N.M. on Thursday, leading 17-2 at the end of the first quarter.
The score at halftime was 2714 and by the third quarter Whitharral led 38-22.
Paige Smith had 21 points. Tyer Parkinson had 14. Madi Chavez had 13. Trinity Coronado had four. Rylee Kristinek had three.
Whitharral 66, Elida 24
The Lady Panthers were equally dominant in the second round, winning 66-25 over Elida, N.M Whitharral led 20-4 at the end of the first period and 41-9 at halftime. Whitharral led 54-25 at the end of three periods.
Smith had 23 points. Chavez had 21. Kristinek had 10. Parkingson and Coronado had five each. Elizabeth Reina had two.
Roy/Mosquero 50, Whitharral 42
The Lady Panthers fell 50-42 in the tournament championship in a game marked by two dominant quarters – one for each team.
Whitharral trailed 12-8 at the end of the first quarter, but rallied back for a 23-17 halftime lead.
Roy Mosquero came out in the third quarter and took the lead 3431 and the Lady Panthers were never able to make up the deficit.
Smith had 17 points. Madi Chavez had 11. Parkinson had 10. Coronado had four.
The Lady Panthers start district play in Amherst on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
