The Levelland Lobos traveled to Sweetwater to take on the Mustangs last Wednesday in UIL District Baseball play where the Lobos won 1-0.
In the top of the first inning Noah Tienda was able to get on base after being hit by the pitch and Rusty Johnson was able to get on as well after he was walked, neither scoring a run though as it sat 0-0.
In the bottom of the first Sweetwater was only able to hit a single in the inning after not scoring still and holding the score 0-0.
In the top of the second inning Charlie Romo was able to be walked, but he was the only Lobo to get on base in the inning.
The Mustangs didn’t have anything go for them in the bottom of the second as they popped out, lined out and flew out.
Levelland followed up in the top of the third with the same results as they struck out, popped out and flew out right after the Mustangs.
Sweetwater was able to get two runners on base after one batter hit a single and another was walked in the bottom of the third, the game still remaining scoreless.
Levelland was finally able to score in the top of the fifth inning after Tienda was hit by the pitch and Rusty Johnson hit a triple to send in Tienda and take the lead 1-0 after five innings.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Sweetwater was able to scare Levelland as they loaded up bases after one batter hit a single, another got on base after Catcher’s Interference and another was hit by the pitch, but the Lobos defense was sound as they didnt give up a run and kept their lead.
Levelland was able to scare the Mustangs as well as they loaded up the bases in the top of the sixth inning after Brayden Moore was walked, Tyler Pemberton hit a single on a line drive to center field and Charlie Romo bunted to the pitcher to earn a single. Although they had runner they weren’t able to capitalize on it and get points from it.
Tienda saved the game for the Lobos in the bottom of the sixth after what looked like the ball was going over his head at shortstop, Tienda was able to make the diving effort for the ball and turn it into a double play by getting the ball to second base off of the ground, getting two outs in an instant.
The Lobos defense prevailed in the bottom of the seventh inning with two line outs and a fly out to end the game and keep their playoff dreams alive.
Tienda earned the win for the Lobos as he gave up four hits and zero runs over five innings, striking out two and walking two.
Boston Winfield appeared in relief for Levelland as he gave up one hits and zero runs over two innings, striking out none and walking none.
Johnson led the team with one run batted in, he went 1-for-3 on the day. Romo went 2-for-2 at the plate to lead the Lobos in hits. The Lobos turned in one double play in the game.
The Lobos progress to 1314-1 on the season as they go up to 5-4 in district play, in a three way tie for third place in district with Estacado and Lakeview.
The Lobos ended district play against the Estacado Matadors this past Friday at home for Senior Night at 7 p.m.
