The Levelland Lobos traveled on the road for a district baseball matchup against the Frenship Memorial Panthers this past Tuesday night, resulting in the Lobos earning a 7-2 win across seven innings to punch their ticket to the postseason for the 11th straight year.
The Lobos came out blazing hot, adding three runs in the second inning, three runs in the third inning and a run in the fourth inning. Memorial would respond with two runs in the final two frames to no avail.
In the team statistics, the Lobos bested the Panthers 8-6 in walks and 1-2 in errors committed, while the Panthers bested the 7-5 in hits.
Levelland’s standouts at the plate included third baseman Braylon Delcampo going 2/4 with two runsbattedin, a run scored and a stolen base, catcher RJ Mireles going ¼ with an RBI and a double, shortstop Abram Arteaga with three walks, three stolen bases and two runs scored, left fielder Tobias Gavina going 1/1 with two walks and a stolen base, and Jake Potter going 1/3 with a run scored, a triple and a walk.
On the mound for the Lobos, Potter pitched 6.1 innings, surrendering one earned run on seven hits and six walks while striking out five batters. He’d be relieved by Ian Rivera, who recorded two outs and struck out a batter.
The win improves the Lobos to 14-15 overall and 6-5 in district play, securing them a top four playoff seed in 4A District 5, which Levelland Head Baseball Coach Chris Portwood reflected on.
“This was the biggest game of our season, and our guys showed what they’re made of when it mattered most. I couldn’t be prouder of the way they competed and stayed together,” Coach Portwood said. “What makes it even more special is the support we feel from this community. Our players hear it, they see it and it fuels them. This win belongs to them as much as it does to us.”
The Lobos have one more regular season matchup against Lubbock Cooper Liberty over the weekend. Following the conclusion of that game and other matchups around the area, the Lobos will be able to determine their first-round opponent.
